After waffling between joining a convent and enlisting in the Marines, I settled on the latter at the age of seventeen. After three years, four sprained ankles, and a badly herniated disc, I ended my time in the Marines and studied English literature, intending to become a teacher. Of course teachers enjoy people, specifically children, and I came to accept my love lay with writing itself, rather than teaching it. So I used my degree to become a professional writer and editor, first with the federal civil service and then with the private sector. I've been doing it on a full time and freelance basis for more than ten years and I don't foresee giving it up anytime soon.

I'm working on the sequel as we speak. My most optimistic projections are that I will have it out late next year, but we'll see if I can stay disciplined. I always post updates to my blog, so once I have a firm date, I will let everyone know. I'll be at Planet Comic Con in May and KC Comic Con in August, so if you know any nerd-oriented people, send them my way :)(less)

I was so interested in learning about the Saxon language and the times that I wondered what would happen if I, as a modern person, got dropped in there. I tend to plan out plots for a long time before I start writing, so I had lots of time to find inspiration for the characters.(less)

The Boys: Amazon's Aptly-Named Meditation on White Men

"White men are nice... until they're not."

I have no idea where the quote above comes from. Perhaps it doesn't come from any particular place at all. It's just a sentence that feels like a quote because it's so damn true.

The Boys is a new series on Amazon Prime based on a graphic novel of the same name. And whether it was intended to be, the show is a full-blown meditation on the modern wester... Read more of this blog post »

“Coming from where we do, it’s a rough adjustment—living here.” He put a hesitant hand on her shoulder, his calluses scratching against the fabric of her dress. “It’s true what they say about life in the dark ages, you know: nasty, brutish, and short. You and I once took it for granted we would die as old people in our beds, but we have no such assurance now. I’ll help you how I can, Isabella; but I can’t guarantee that either of us will live even to see tomorrow. Life is worth fighting for, young lady. But don’t feel it is something you’re owed.”
Kristin McTiernan, Sunder

“What I mean by an educated taste is someone who has the same tastes that I have.”
Edward Albee

“The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.”
William Arthur Ward

Voltaire

“Child, child, do you not see? For each of us comes a time when we must be more than what we are.”
