When Hurricane Katrina destroyed the Mississippi Gulf Coast and south Louisiana, I was in the middle of writing a novel. This was the region I grew up in, where all my family was from, so it was emotional seeing the devastation. A lifetime of memories were gone--places I had fallen in love, made love, and just plain loved, were all gone. I spent a week there after the hurricane, helping family and friends get back to some state of livability.

After that, I couldn't write. Every past idea seemed irrelevant, and every new idea I could think of seemed too big to make sense of. I tried often, but could never get past the first paragraph. After a while I started to think of my writing in the past tense. But I still felt a hunger to write, and now and then kept trying. I tried to remember why I wanted to write, and how I felt before when I wrote, and none of it worked. None of it mattered.

So one day I just sat down and started writing what I saw outside a car window. I invented a character on the spot, and just followed where she led. I had no idea what would happen, and it wasn't really the first time I had tried it, but this time, with no preconceptions of what I wanted to happen, and no attachments to what I had written or imagined in the past, a story began to pour out of me. And it consumed me, and I couldn't stop writing it. I thought it would all be garbage, but it was fun to write, so I kept going. Later, when I reread it, it was much better than I thought. I cleaned it up and put it on Amazon, and called it "Inside Charlotte."(less)

I believe that we all have complex ideas and understandings within us, but that when we try to express them, even in thoughts in our own heads, the ideas become restricted by having to fit into words and sentences. The best part of writing, to me, is getting in touch with these sub-lingual places in our mind. To me writing is letting these thoughts out, letting them dance around until the words we know can express them in ways we've never been able to describe them before. It's a way for us to learn what we know. (less)

Patient Lee is just really a good writer. She develops characters, creates settings you can feel and see and smell, and creates stories that you read for more than just the erotic ending. I'm now a fan.

“Do you want me to tell you something really subversive? Love is everything it's cracked up to be. That's why people are so cynical about it. It really is worth fighting for, being brave for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you don't risk anything, you risk even more.”
