Kit Bakke spent the last half of the 20th century as a political radical (SDS and the Weather Underground), a pediatric oncology nurse, and an information technology consultant. In the 21st century, she became a published writer. Her MISS ALCOTT'S E-MAIL has led to further writing adventures, including being a founding member of Seattle7Writers (www.seattle7writers.org) and a chapter in HOTEL ANGELINE. Her next book, DANCING ON THE EDGE, is a story of travel, discovery and possibly magic. Young teens, if they are good readers, like it, and so do adults. Parochial: “limited or narrow outlook”

A beach apart

One of the interesting aspects of traveling outside the US is to look at our country from a distance, through others’ eyes. Here is a thought-provoking example from London written by Terry Eagleton in his review of two books,The Madness of CrowdsandThe Problem of Everything.

“Because the US is a deeply parochial society, not much given to seeing itself from the outside, what seems o...

Another great outing with Richard Powers. His books (his mind) are incredible. They are novels, great stories, but you end up also learning a lot about topical things, like trees (The Overstory--current Pulitzer Prize winner) or in the case of The ...more

Just finished Jenny Erpenbeck's Go Went Gone. A novel by a German woman (translated into English by Susan Bernofsky) about the African refugee influx into the EU in I think 2012-4 (before the Syrian refugees arrived). It's written from the ...more
Kit added a status update: Been reading some Iris Murdoch and Muriel Spark for the first time. I am very impressed with Murdoch's ability to juggle many characters and many ideas and still make it seem like a British summertime novel. the one I read is "The Nice and The Good."

Cannot say enough good things about this book. Read it! whether or not you've seen the musical "Hamilton." Either way, it's an eye-opener. All the stuff they never taught you about the founding fathers and early American history, told in a highly ...more

The Gold Bug Variations by Richard Powers

A bit more dense than his most recent book The Overstory. Clearly an earlier book, not as tightly written as his later books, but wonderful all the same. About music and computers and people and love and destruction--all his usual interests.

Her first real novel, very well crafted. I'm probably in the minority of fiction-reading American women when I say that I have read nothing else she's written except Truth and Beauty: A Friendship about her friend Lucy Grealy. But I like the fact ...more

I'd not come across Jane Gardam's books before, and I've really been missing out! She's a terrific writer. She has a way of being spare and heartfelt in the same sentence. It's amazing how much she can convey to the reader--emotions, pictures, ...more
