Kit Bakke spent the last half of the 20th century as a political radical (SDS and the Weather Underground), a pediatric oncology nurse, and an information technology consultant. In the 21st century, she became a published writer. Her MISS ALCOTT'S E-MAIL has led to further writing adventures, including being a founding member of Seattle7Writers (www.seattle7writers.org) and a chapter in HOTEL ANGELINE. Her next book, DANCING ON THE EDGE, is a story of travel, discovery and possibly magic. Young teens, if they are good readers, like it, and so do adults. Her latest book PROTEST ON TRIAL: THE SEATTLE 7 CONSPIRACY "chronicles a significant, real-life slice of history, but it reads more like a well-crafted novel and reminds us that dissent--now ...more

My daughter made me a little book of 50 ways to fight writer's block and I posted a bunch of them on my blog on my website kitbakke.com. (less)
Kit Bakke It's pretty fun to pretend that other people might care about what I think or imagine.

The Joys of Electoral Politics

I’m back on track with current events, after taking a few days off to mourn Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the end of the American democracy as we know it. But…perhaps there is a light at the end of the tunnel after all…I’ve been text banking for 2020Victory. A very organized process, supported by easy to sue software (Slack and a server called ThruText), detailed training sessions, and encouraging mento

This book is SO valuable. It's one of those books that just had to be written. If you are a moderately woke white person, some of it will not be new--the concept of white privilege is pretty much accepted by many white people, but diAngelo takes it o ...more

I have inherited a grocery bag chock full of mostly 20th century British murder mysteries. Perfect reading for these strange times. Things are orderly in these books! There is a solution! They are fiction!

I wish I could remember who recommended this book to me, so I could thank them. The story and characters are weird but normal, which makes it powerful and scary. Simple words (or so I assume, as it's been translated from the Japanese) describing live ...more

Incredible, as were the previous two. Not everyone loves Mantel's style--I've actually run into a couple people who said they didn't get it, couldn't follow her tracks into the mind (researched, but also imagined), dialog and plot of Thomas Cromwell' ...more

The Round House by Louise Erdrich
" Hi Arleen! doing OK in these strange times? I've never read Erdrich but keep thinking I should... "
Kit added a status update: Reading, that is, inhaling Hilary Mantel's The Mirror and the Light. Who else is reading this piece of genius? Cannot imagine how she can keep up this incredible style over all three books. I am wandering around (pandemically isolated) in Tudor times, smelling the flowers, tasting the spices, feeling the silks and tapestries. It's incredible. Also pretty amazing how the politics seems not so different from today.
