V.L. Brunskill has been a professional writer for 20 years. She ditched journalism class after landing her very first interview with the late, great punk icon Joey Ramone. As a national music journalist, V.L.'s work appeared in publications such as Metronome Magazine, CREEM, The Boston Globe, and Boston Phoenix. From hundreds of rock star interviews to rocking ions, V.L. went on to become a technical writer in the semiconductor & IT fields.

Born in Brooklyn, New York on Christmas Eve, and adopted after 7 months in foster care, V.L. was reborn in 1991, when she was reunited with her biological parents. She moved south to be closer to both. V.L. lives in Savannah with her bass-player husband, above-average daughter, and delightfully bad do

Hi there Tina,

I live in Savannah. I am adopted and searched for my birth parents for thirteen years years. I found my birth mother in Florida, and my birth father in North Carolina. Ten years ago, Boston had an exceptionally harsh winter. The snow on my porch was taller than my daughter, and it stayed that way for a month. That's when we decided to move South. We were taking a lot of road trips back and forth to see my new found family, so we figured why not move closer. (We took my adoptive mom with us.)

We chose Savannah as our home because the city has been so lovingly restored. As you know, the downtown is romantic, historic and beautiful. I fell head over heels in love with slurry walkways, brick facades and all that stunning ironwork. I wrote 'Waving Backwards' at several downtown locations. Savannah is a perfect backdrop for a mysterious story about family, and bloodlines. I'm sure you know how important lineage is in this city. To have a girl who knows nothing about her parents, look for them among residents who can trace their bloodlines back hundreds of years, is delicious fodder for a writer.

I stood on the platform of our Waving Girl statue, and rubbed her belly. I would have loved to see her when you lived here. I think she was closer to the River. Is that right?

Thanks for asking! Hope to hear more of your Savannah memories, and that you get to come back for a visit soon.

All the news of immigrant babies in cages has stirred quite a lot of resentment, pain, and outrage in the world. This is especially true among adoptees and first mothers. I have several hundred Facebook friends who reside in a world defined by separation. We are a varied and interesting brood from all parts of society. The one thing we have in common is that by force, or societal expectations,...
