The spooky season is upon us! Although Reviewsday Tuesday often has a human-centric focus, this month, I want to celebrate the nonhuman by reading your best reviews on the theme “creature feature.” The theme can be interpreted as broadly as you want; I want not only ghosts and ghouls and traditionally spooky monsters, but also aliens, cryptids, fantasy creatures, animal companions, sentient plants, you name it. Here are some prompts to get you going:

Review a book, movie, TV show, or video game that features at least one nonhuman character. Here are a few examples that come to mind: The Little Mermaid, Watership Down, Dr. Dolittle, The Shape of Water, Redwall, ET, Wednesday, Cujo, Sharknado, The Lord of the Rings. Notice how there are many genres covered by this theme — not just horror!Review a spooky experience that involves a “creature” in some way, such as your favourite childhood Halloween costume or a real-life ghost story.Review a nonspooky nonhuman creature feature! October is often oversaturated with spookiness. Why not review your favourite talking-animal Disney movie, an animal rescue service or charity, a meme or funny animal video, or even your own pet?

Remember, these prompts are designed to inspire your creativity and encourage you to write engaging reviews. (And of course, not all reviews submitted to Reviewsday Tuesday need to follow the theme. Unrelated stories will still be published, they just won’t be eligible for the prize.)

Feel free to personalize these topics according to your preferences, or submit something totally unexpected: other entries related to the monthly theme are very much welcome and encouraged!

Good luck to everyone who participates!

I will be announcing the winner of September’s monthly theme prize soon.
