Once I start writing tough, the characters seem to take over and I feel that I am describing their lives rather than creating the narrative. Following them, I will often end up in a completely different place than the one I originally imagined.(less)

I greatly enjoyed writing the first one so did a couple more:

The ‘brace position’ seemed daft to me as we were going to die anyway so I took a last look out of my window at the city of New York as we skimmed low over the skyscrapers. A terrified but defiant scream of ‘Allahu Akbar!’ was the last thing I heard before the plane exploded into a million tiny pieces.

Dragged from my cell in the early morning and marched through the freezing dark underground corridors, I am now kneeling in a puddle of blood. The blood is not mine but my blood will soon join it as the cold muzzle of a gun is pressed hard against the back of my head.

As I subconsciously brushed away whatever was tickling my face, I was jolted awake by a strange sensation. Sitting bolt upright in my bed, my heart pounding erratically, I stared at the huge black spider staring back at me from my pillow - had I been bitten?
