Jeffrey Westhoff has served as a film critic, feature writer, reporter, and copy editor in his career as a journalist. Jeffrey wrote his first novel, The Boy Who Knew Too Much, while working as a freelance writer.

Jeffrey grew up in Erie, Pa., where he spent his Saturday mornings at the library and his Saturday nights at the movies. That love of reading and film prepared his future as a movie critic. Seeing Star Wars on its opening day in 1977 made him a movie lover, but it was a viewing of The Spy Who Loved Me that sealed Jeffrey’s fate as a James Bond fan. His first published movie review appeared in the Erie Times-News while he was senior in high school.

Also during his senior year of high school, Jeffrey made a campus visit to Marquette U

I am working on another spy novel, but it will be aimed at younger readers.

However, a short story featuring Foster Blake, the fictional superspy I invented as background for The Boy Who Knew Too Much is banging away at my consciousness and I may have to write that first.

I recently wrote a short spy story, "Sidetracked," starring a teenage girl and set during the Cold War, that will be included in the anthology Young Adventurers: Heroes, Explorers & Swashbucklers coming in autumn 2015 from Intrigue Publishing. The story pays tribute to one of my favorite books, Harriet the Spy.(less)

I attended a book signing by my author friend Laura Caldwell at Read Between the Lynes bookstore in Woodstock, Ill. Looking for sources, I asked Laura if she knew anyone writing a teenage spy novel. She misunderstood my question and said, "You're writing a teenage spy novel?" I told her no and she replied, "You should!" And I said, "You're right. I should!"

On the drive home that night, I had my title, my main character, and my first chapter sorted out. The article I was working on fizzled out, but I did get my first book out of it.

I give more details about the origin to The Boy Who Knew Too Much in my Tumblr. (See how hip I am? I call it "my Tumblr," not "my Tumblr blog"):

“All the greatest men are maniacs. They are possessed by a mania which drives them forward towards thier goal. The great scientists, the philosophers, the religious leaders - all maniacs. What else but a blind singlenee of purpose could have given focus to thier genius, would have kept them in the groove of purpose. Mania ... is as priceless as genius.”

“She was beginning to stir questions in me that I'd spent all my life refusing to ask, since the day I had looked down from the window at the broken body of the schoolboy on the flagstones a long way below, while a master hurried from the cloisters with his black gown flapping in the winter wind, to see what had happened: the day when I was suddenly old enough to understand that I had a choice. I could either do what that other boy had done, or I could spend the rest of my life outside society, where it was safe”
