Kristen McKendry began writing in her teens and her work has been published in Canada and the U.S. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Linguistics from Brigham Young University and has always been a voracious reader.

Kristen has a strong interest in urban agriculture, sustainable living, environmental issues, and the local foods movement. She incorporates these themes in her writing, and she also lets her Mormon background flavour her work to make her culture more accessible to mainstream readers. She enjoys playing the bagpipes and banjo, learning obscure languages, growing wheat in the backyard, and making cheese. Raised in Utah, she now resides with her family in Canada. She's also the proud grandmother of the world's cutest kids, Rowyn and

I usually re-read all of Robin Pilcher and Rosamunde Pilcher's books every summer (they just seem like good pool-side reading). And I always have a non-fiction or two going at the same time, usually something to do with sustainability or global warming or travel. (It depends what's available at the library.) But at some point I really have to buckle down and do some writing too, I suppose! Thanks for the question! What books do you recommend?(less)

My husband's great-grandfather had a brother who disappeared in his mid 20s and was never heard of again...I've always wished we could solve that one. And there are questions surrounding the death of our former foster son years ago. There is some suspicion it might have been murder. But there's no way to prove it. So...the same question back to you. Are there mysteries in your life too? - Kristen(less)

Thoughts on a stash of yarn

A member of the local weavers' guild passed away recently, and her family is making her yarn stash available to those who want to buy it at a discount. I thought about it and managed to talk myself out of it---I have so much yarn tucked away in bins in the crawlspace already. Really, I shouldn't buy more unless it's for a specific project.

It got me to thinking, though, of all... Read more of this blog post »

I would go to Three Pines in the Eastern Townships of Quebec (from Louise Penny's series). I would sit on the bench on the green and watch the kids throw snowballs at each other, browse the bookstore, and go for a hot chocolate at the bistro, wher... See Full Answer

I really enjoyed this book. Brent Preston is realistic about the challenges - physical and emotional - of starting a small organic farm and points out that it isn't all the idealistic running-through-fields-of-daisies life. He talks about marketing a ...more
