Karen's high school teacher told her she should be a writer, but it took quite a few years for that thought to take root. She began writing shortly after she was hired to manage the local library. Run Like Jager is her first novel. Since then she has published Summer of Fire and Drummer Girl, all with Coteau Books. Her newest novel, Graffiti Knight, was released in August 2013 (Pajama Press).

A fourth generation Albertan, Karen attended the University of Alberta and received a psychology degree from the University of Victoria. She currently lives with her family in northwestern Alberta where she just left the library she had managed for 16 years to write full-time.

I wish they had half stars on Goodreads. This is a 4.5 in my books. The only book I've read this year with enough suspense in it that I didn't want to put it down. Well-rounded characters and twists I didn't expect made for a fun read.

Meh. I read half of it, but found it lacklustre and too top-heavy with futuristic lingo.

I'm a sucker for a good time-travel story. This did not disappoint. And it has a brilliant twist with the travelling, which I won't give away, but which I haven't seen done before. I loved the action, the setting, the inclusion of Da Vinci. However I ...more

An excellent read. Unlike some dysopians, this future world is very possible, which gives the story an added edge. I generally enjoy dystopian stories and this one did not disappoint. There were, however, too many unanswered questions, which, as some ...more

Kristin Butcher Hi Karen,
Hope all is well in your world. I haven't fallen off the face of the earth; just left the social network. (It's been a year and a half already.) It wasn't a a healthy fit for me. New book coming out next spring. In the meantime, I'm honing my painting skills. Who knows? Perhaps I can become an illustrator.
