I set the work aside and work on something else. Fortunately, I never have a shortage of ideas, scenes, or dialogue, but I have to focus to keep a certain through-line for the story. I’m such a dedicated person when I write, I have to discipline myself to take breaks and step away when the story gets cloudy and I start to get in the way. I think it’s even more difficult when you write historical fiction because of the months/years of research you do. It’s not easy cutting scenes you have worked so hard on, especially one that involved much research. So while I don’t usually have writer’s block, I often have too many scenes and have to step back and be honest if they are necessary.(less)

Writing is such a solitary process, so at this stage it is exciting when you see people are enjoying your book and connecting with you. I’m always amazed how stories come. How pages get filled. How characters magically appear on the page. How they speak. And the stories they tell. I love being surprised by the direction a story takes. I love when the characters teach me something.

In my blog post, “From the Author,” I share an experience I had while doing research for Essie’s Roses in Richmond, Virginia. It encompasses why I love writing. You hope to have fun, entertain your readers, but to me, it’s always about learning… learning about history, myself, and others. And it’s special when something unexpectedly touches your life and changes you forever.(less)

More of Michelle's books…
“You are stronger than you think. I have weathered many storms, tragedies, and heartaches in my life–and here I am still standing. Here you are still standing. Joy is right around the corner you just have to change your focus and look for it. And that can be rough. Rough roads can be unbearable, but you can walk them. Sometimes when you come to the end of yourself–give yourself a chance to dig in deeper. Look for the good, and you’ll find strength you never knew you had.”
Michelle Muriel
