I've been reading This is the Story of a Happy Marriage, a collection of essays that are often about writing, and author Ann Patchett gives some writing advice in one of them. She says that we wouldn't expect someone to pick up the cello and be an expert after a few lessons, yet we say "Everyone has a book in them" and expect that our first attempt will be a bestseller.

So I'm going to agree with Patchett on my #1 piece of advice: If you want to be a writer, write. Write lots. Write and rewrite. Keep writing, even if you're hating it, until you learn how to produce something that's good. It's a skill as much as it is an art, and you need practice to master a skill. Believe me - Water Witch may be the first book listed under this name, but it's far from the first book I wrote! So keep writing, learn how to do beginnings and middles and ends, learn how to build characters and scenes and worlds, learn how to do all the editing that comes next, and don't worry. It's not nearly as hard as learning the cello!(less)

My next project is to get Earth Witch ready for publication. If all goes well, I hope to start work on the third book in the series, Fire Witch.(less)

Here's a good example of historical fiction, which is always good to read when you're doing a history-like setting such as (non-urban) fantasy. Freeman packs her novel with period detail and really makes the setting come to life, especially in the co ...more

Fantasy by an absolute master. It's interesting to look at how writing styles have changed over the decades - Le Guin does a ton of things that are now considered no-no's in the "rules of writing," but it shows that you can do just about anything as ...more

I first picked this up as a challenge - epic fantasy isn't my favorite subgenre and I wanted to prove to myself I could get through it. About halfway in, the book becomes absolutely fascinating and the characters really come to life.
