I’m An Asshole

Guys, I have a story. Wanna know how bad I am at remembering faces?

Since we’ve lived in this house, the landlord (who we’ve never met personally) has employed a handyman named… let’s call him Oscar, just to keep his anonymity. I’ve seen Oscar a lot over the years and he’s always very pleasant and efficient.

And it’s been nice because, quite honestly, we don’t know a lot of people in our neighborhood. I know our nextdoor neighbors, a nice multi-generational family, enough to wave and say hello from afar, but that’s about it.

So, Oscar came by today to check on some things that need repairing. And we were talking about how he’s been and everything. I jokingly mentioned how the water pressure dropped when the city was repairing the street and he said, “Yeah, that happened at our house, too.”

I knew he lived nearby, but later in the conversation he mentioned that he lived in the neighborhood. And I thought, “Oh, he lives really nearby, then. Cool.”

So, we said goodbye, he left and I watched him walk to his home… directly next to ours.

He’s one of the multi-generational family members and I’ve waved to him a hundred times, never realizing he was Oscar.

And, embarrassingly, it’s not the first time I’ve had an exchange with his family in which I forgot how to human.
