I have so little time and so many projects happening at once, if I hit a difficult moment in one, I turn to another. Cross-disciplines are very important. Aside from my creative pursuits with writing, I own an executive branding and admissions firm. Branding is rooted in science, and this work informs my creative pursuits. An admissions client once asked: “How can you write books AND help people with their applications?” That is simple. I help my clients define who they are, where they want to be, and exactly how to get there. And I watch their lives change. It’s called chasing a vision. This is as important to me as writing fiction. With my writing, by the time I go back to the first puzzle, I bring a fresh perspective to it. If I ever find that I hit a wall intellectually, that is when music and activity are important. Steve Jobs believed in walking to inspire creative vision. And this goes back through some of the greatest thinkers and visionaries of all time: Aristotle, Darwin, Beethoven, as well as many of the great writers, Dickens, Nabokov, Alcott, Woolf, Hemingway. The list is endless. My greatest ideas come when I am doing something other than sitting. (less)

It allows us to understand and relate to one another in ways we often can’t via the spoken word—through reflection, and intelligence, and wisdom. Through the process of writing, we are forced to take a close look at ourselves, to confront and expose the truth—no matter how difficult or painful that may be—then confront what may not be working in our lives, and reshape our existence into something that is meaningful and rich and real. Writing has always made my life meaningful and rich and real. This is the reason I love being a writer. (less)
