The Sisterhood of the World Blogger Award

THE SISTERHOOD OF THE WORLD BLOGGER AWARD

I was so excited and honored to be nominated for The Sisterhood of the World Blogger Award. This is such an exciting award to participate in because it is so interactive. A HUGE thank you to Sina Alisa for the nomination. Check out her beautiful blog at https://sinaalisa.wordpress.com/. She’s only been blogging since February, but she is already is a pro! Check out some very relatable and interesting posts by her. I adore her blog description . . . “Let your beauty unfold.” Okay, so here are the rules for the award:

“Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award recognizes the unique voices of women bloggers around the world.”

What you need to do:

Thank the blogger who nominated you, linking back to their site.
Put the award logo on your blog.
Answer the ten questions they have sent you.
Make up ten new questions for your nominees to answer.
Nominate ten people

My Answers:

What does music mean to you in your life?

I was a band nerd in high school; I played trumpet. So music was everything. Now, it’s just a way to relax and get rid of some steam. When I’m studying, I always have on Pandora’s “Classical for Studying” channel. I also tend to dance around my house with my mastiff Henry to some Taylor Swift just for fun J

Shoes or Handbags?

Shoes . . .I have quite the collection (mostly clearance finds, in my defense).

Do you use blogging to help escape from the everyday tedium or hustle bustle?

I tend to use blogging as a platform to explore some of thoughts and insights about the day that I don’t always talk about. Posts about my fears, my biggest life dreams, love, and even beauty products help me vent about my life.

What made you decide to start blogging?

When my novel was published in February, I realized that I needed to start building an author platform. At first I had no idea what I was doing. Every post was tedious. Now, though, I love it. As I said, it gives me a place to talk about issues and observations that I wouldn’t always express.

How do you like your pizza?

Either with extra cheese or with green peppers.

Name something unique about the city you live in.

We are known as the home of the slinky; its inventors are from here.

What hobbies do you have outside of blogging?

Shopping, hanging out with Henry, and Netflix.

If today was your last day, what would you do?

That’s a deep one! I would probably just hang out at home with my husband, cats, and Henry. We would eat all of my favorite foods and just spend some time relaxing. Nothing elaborate. It’s all about who I’m with, not what I’m doing.

If you were to give a total newbie advice on blogging, what would be the first thing you’d say?

Don’t worry about writing something that will be “trendy” or “marketable.” Write from the heart. Write what interests you. Write about what you care about. People will find you, and it will be genuine.

If I gave you £100 or € or $ haha (I know I’m too nice!) what would you buy right now?

Probably a new outfit or I would spend it all on splurges at Ulta. J

My ten questions for my nominees are:

Do you have any pets and if so, what?
Do you have a regular blogging schedule, or do you only blog when the inspiration strikes you?
What is your favorite restaurant?
What is your biggest, craziest life goal and why?
If you had to pick only one adjective to describe yourself, what would you choose?
What is your favorite place you have ever visited?
How would you describe your writing style?
What is your favorite blog post you ever wrote so far?
What is your favorite childhood memory?
If you had to give one piece of advice for living a fulfilled life, what would it be?

My nominations are:

Signed Arouge , BeginnerBeaute, bluchickenninja,  That Career Girl, Charlene Chic,  Kimberely Crawford, Therareruby, penniemaecartawick, Jackie G Mills, Brianne’s Reviews

Small Moments Can Change Everything

It was my first full year of teaching when I realized that we really can make a difference in this world through small, simple acts.

I had given my Honors students a survey, one of the questions being: “What can I do to help you succeed this year?” One of my students answered: “Nothing. I’m pretty much a hopeless.”

I took a minute to think about her response and then wrote, “You’re not a hopeless case! Don’t give up. I am here to help you.” I passed back the papers and honestly forgot about the comment.

I had a wonderful year with that group of students. This student in particular lit up the class with her zany sense of humor. At the end of the year, she handed me a handwritten thank you note. In the note, she explained that at the beginning of the year, she was really in a bad place and lacking confidence, but when I wrote that comment on her paper at the beginning of the year, it made a huge difference to her.

I was shocked. I had simply taken two minutes to write an encouraging comment on this student’s paper; months and months later, she still remembered the comment and even thanked me for it. I realized then what a huge opportunity we have every single day to make a positive impact in others’ lives. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate expedition to another country or a huge donation. It doesn’t have to be an act of kindness that takes hours to plan. Sometimes it’s just a few kind words that can change a person’s perception, attitude, and even life path.

Leave It Beauty Products

So yesterday I posted about my top five “love it” beauty products. Today, I’m focusing on items that didn’t impress me. Remember, everyone is different, so you may end up liking these. If you’re still dying to try them, don’t let me stop you!

Fat Girl Slim Cream

Okay, okay, I know . . .you can’t expect a beach body from a jar of cream. But I bought

this to smooth my skin on my thighs (okay, yes, to smooth cellulite. Cringe). I used it

religiously for three weeks before the beach. And I don’t think it did a single thing.

Baby Feet Foot Peel

I heard rave reviews about this product on the Today Show, so I spent $30 on this foot

mask. It’s supposed to make all of your rough skin/calluses peel off your feet over the

course of two weeks after you’ve worn it. I followed the directions, and nothing happened. I waited two whole weeks for results. And nothing happened. I even wrote to the company to complain. And nothing happened. Bad customer service and a bad product=one sad girl who was $30 poorer.

Bare Minerals Naked Skin Serum

I love how this serum looks on my face. What I don’t love? The bottle constantly leaks. Like it sits in my medicine cupboard and just oozes out everywhere. There is more of the product in my cabinet than I’ve ever used. And between the foundation and the special brush you need to apply it, I spent over $50 on it. Again, I wrote to Bare Minerals to tell them about the faulty design of the container . . .and they just emailed me to say thank you.

Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Cream

So after the Naked Skin Serum fiasco, I thought I’d opt for the BB Cream gel. It is

supposed to make your skin softer and better in appearance while also providing the

coverage of a foundation. I’ve found that it just makes my skin look greasy. It doesn’t cover like foundation at all. I love you Bare Minerals, but work on your liquid foundation formulas.

Kat Von D Mascara

I was so excited to try this when I got it free at Sephora as a sample. And then I wore it to school . . .and I wanted to rip my eyes out of my head. This mascara made my eyes burn and hurt so badly that I couldn’t wear contacts for days. I expected some tough chick lashes; instead I was verging on an eye infection. I do have sensitive eyes, so it may not be so bad for you.

Any products you’ve tried that you wish you hadn’t spent the money on? Leave comments below so we can all benefit from some firsthand trial and error!

My Love It Beauty Products

So as you know, I am a teacher, a writer, and a cosmetic addict. If I didn’t become a teacher, I would have probably went to cosmetology school because I adore beauty products. I am a frequent Ulta shopper, and I adore Sephora. I have more lipsticks and eyeshadows than I could use in my entire lifetime. Yeah, it’s a problem.

I figured I would tell you about some of my newest “love its” from the beauty store in the hopes that you can save yourself some money and only buy great products :) All items are cruelty free, which is an extra plus for you animal lovers out there.

Macadamia Professionals Ultra Rich Conditioner

I got this on clearance at Ulta, and I love how soft it makes my hair! A definite buy for dry hair.

 It’s A 10 Leave-In Treatment

This was a free sample I got at Ulta. It’s a leave-in

conditioner that makes your hair super soft and shiny. I use this a few times a week, especially when I am straightening my hair. However, a hairdresser told me that the Keratin in this product can weaken your hair over time, so don’t overuse.

Jamberry

I know I’ve written about these before, but I am seriously obsessed! I have had my

manicure and pedicure on for two weeks now, and they still look great. The stylebox comes with two sets of strips (enough for two manicures and two pedicures) for only $25. The more you use them, the better you get at them. My manicure looks professional, and I love the color choices!

Too Faced Mascara

I hate mascara. It always makes my eyes itchy. However, the Too Faced “Better Than

Sex”  (cue childish giggles) is fantastic.

Bare Minerals Lip Quickie

I wrote about this the other day, but I am a fan. This balm like color goes on smoothly,

doesn’t dry your lips, and all of the colors are really flattering. I love the bright purples that go on with just the right intensity.

So those are my recent beauty obsessions. Have anything that you’ve tried and love? Leave a comment below. Tomorrow, I’ll be giving you my five beauty “leave its” in the hopes of saving your wallet.

Why I Love an Ordinary Vacation

I just got back from several days at Ocean City, Maryland, so I thought I’d write about our adventure…but there’s one problem: nothing adventurous happened.  In fact, this vacation was the same  as last year and the year before that.

For decades, my family has been in a vacation rut. We go to the same beach, stay at the same hotels, eat at the same restaurants. We have our beach schedule down to a science. There isn’t a spontaneous sailing adventure or a new restaurant. Some would be bored by our vacation routine, saying that we should mix it up. I know plenty of world travelers who go somewhere different every year; clearly we are missing out. However,  when planning our vacation, we always come back to OC.

There’s something to be said for knowing what to expect, especially on vacation. Sure, nothing risked, nothing gained and all of that. But feeling comfortable on vacation gives us a more wonderful gift than adventure- the chance to focus purely on family. We laugh together, visit our local faves, and even argue. But at the end of the week, we leave one familiar routine for another feeling connected. That is what vacation is about, not jet skis and skydiving.

Some year we’ll probably mix it up and go somewhere new. But for right now,  my ordinary vacation is just fine with me. Ocean City remunds me of my childhood, of the familiar, and of family memories I wouldn’t trade for anything.
