Most often I take my dog for a walk. We walk 6 miles - which takes about an hour and a half - and it is amazing what comes to mind. I focus on a couple of things: one is what is going on around us as we walk. The second is first sentences. I often find that once I have that first compelling sentence to start the chapter, the paragraph - or the book for that matter, I am ready to charge ahead.

And the second thing I do? Hot yoga. It's hot, it is sweaty, and it really helps me focus!(less)

You cannot imagine how thrilled I am that you liked my book. And the answer to your question...it was really hard, but it just happened--the right story at the right time--and a lot of good luck! (Which is what I wish for you)

Funny, nostalgic, intelligent, packed with perfectly intimate historical and cultural references. I love this book! I love the irony of the premise, a man—an aesthete fully invested in the imperial era—punished in post-revolutionary Russia for the ...more

“A story is a garden you carry in your pocket. The stories we tell ourselves and each other are for pleasure and refuge. Like gardens they are small places in a large world. But, Jinhua, we must never mistake the stories we tell for truth.”
Alexandra Curry, The Courtesan

“She found the book tucked at the edge of a shelf in the room where she sleeps, and it is thick with pages and words and characters, and reading helps Jinhua to remember and it helps her to forget--and it has been such a long, long time since she has held a book in her hands. When she is not reading Jinhua is sad...”
Alexandra Curry, The Courtesan

“Do not worry [..] about what has not yet happened. The future is long. Now, close your eyes and sleep, and do not allow today to use up the moments that belong to tomorrow.”
Alexandra Curry, The Courtesan

“History is that certainty produced at the point where the imperfections of memory meet the inadequacies of documentation.”
Julian Barnes, The Sense of an Ending

“If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.”
Rudyard Kipling, The Collected Works

“Books say: She did this because. Life says: She did this. Books are where things are explained to you; life is where things aren't. I'm not surprised some people prefer books. Books make sense of life. The only problem is that the lives they make sense of are other people's lives, never your own.”
Julian Barnes, Flaubert's Parrot
