It's a reference to a character in the brilliant Sidney Poitier film 'In the Heat of the Night', and its sequel, 'They Call Me Mr Tibbs'. DC Dennis Tibbs is a black officer, so he is nicknamed Virgil after the FBI character so wonderfully played by Poitier in the film. If you've not seen it, I highly recommend it!(less)

Not only a Book 9, which I have just started, but also a retrospective prequel to the series, which will be released in time for New Year. If you join the We Love Ted Darling group on Facebook, you can see a sneaky little extract from the prequel.(less)

Yes, it's far-fetched in places. But I found the writing strong enough to pull me past those parts into wanting to read on. I read the French translation, Silver Water, and didn't find many errors in that, although I note that some reviews refer to b ...more

I tried not to let my pet hate for books without chapters cloud my judgement of this book. My other big irritant was the endless lists.

"no chapters and fast paced, so was pretty exhausting! A few unlikable characters, like the exhusband - what was she doing with such a loser - which kind of reflected badly on her character. Don't like the way French tends to portrays police as bumbli" Read more of this review »

I'm always on the lookout for something a bit different in crime fiction, where so much is a bit same-old, same-old. The senior officer in this, Commandant Camille Verhoeven, at just 4' 8" is certainly different. I read it as a standalone, not having ...more
