I can’t believe it’s already February 1! A month of the RWiR position –my first–has come & gone (time to celebrate with cake–lots and lots of cake!!).
As I look back, what are some of the things I loved about January (other than hanging with writers, getting to read stories, chortling with librarians, and hanging with my wro-bro Omar, I mean)…
The jingling sounds the keys to my office make when I take them out of my pocket
Being able to go...

Worth Reading ~ Quiet by Susan Cain
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking
From Amazon.ca’s link:
Amazon.ca Editors’ Pick: Best Books of 2012
At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled “quiet,” it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society–from van...

Want to Submit Pages?
Here’s a quick FAQ for submitting your work to us:
The maximum submission is 10 pages. Hey, we’re writers, I’m with you on the “but the chapter’s 20 pages,” but this limit makes it fair to all writers, as well as makes the readings manageable, so we can get you feedback in a timely manner.
Please double-space your work
Please use 12 font
Please use 1-inch margins
That’s it! Send your work to regionalwir@gmail.com (Natasha) or omouallem@epl.ca (Omar).
From Natasha:
I’ll send you a confirmation that I...

I’m prepping for the workshop on character and was thinking about how the character’s thought processes have an effect on the way they view the world…and I got to thinking about how often we mis-hear something but because our brain is a wonder, we rearrange and filter the information so that it makes sense…for example:
For the longest time, I thought Bon Jovi sang, “Shot through the heart and you’re too lame, baby, you give love a bad n...

The Pros of Being a Volunteer
© Kmitu | Dreamstime.com
The cool thing about being a writer is that every experience is potential story information. For example, volunteering for casino for the Young Alberta Book Society yesterday, this is what I learned:
1) There is A LOT of ceremony/rituals/protocols when bringing chips to the table–you have to verify monies, watch the chip
s being stocked…not to mention where & how the chips are stacked, are very important.
2) The naughty gamblers aren’t (as I think, most of us suspect) you...

It Never Fades
© Daniaphoto | Stock Free Images & Dreamstime Stock Photos
It’s hard to figure out how long I’ve been writing…I mean, I sort of started in 2003 but in my mind, I didn’t really become a writer (as defined by the attitude I brought to the work & the manuscripts) until 2005/2006…it’s been 7 or 8 years now, and there’s been a ton of ups and downs, tens of thousands of pages, and loads of ink cartridges…but you know what never fades? The excitement when I start a new book.
I’m getting set to begin t...
Neil M. Ross – Mrs. Riemann’s Grade Two Class Story
One hot, summer day a superhero hamster named Jamie flew to China. She had to save a hat store from a super villain named Jack. He liked to look fancy and he had one hundred heads. So Jack liked to wear all kinds of hats. He loved top hats and DC hats and cowboy hats. Plus, he liked money. So he was going to steal the store’s hats and money. Cha-ching!
Jamie landed on the busy street in the town. She ran into the crowded store and grabbed Jack by...
