The Globe and Mail wrote, "...Dower is a masterful storyteller." With the publication of her second novel, Becoming Lin (Caitlin Press 2016), the Vancouver Sun wrote, "Some of the most powerful and eloquent Canadian novelists of the 20th and 21st centuries...incl ...more

From that novel, I took a character, Linda Wise, and gave her a book of her own: Becoming Lin. I did that because I felt I had left her woefully prepared for adult life at the end of Stony River. I was curious: would she break away from her overprotective parents and build an independent life? How long would the sexual assault she suffered when she was fourteen haunt her?(less)

a-crazy-haggertyStony River opens with two girls spying on the dilapidated house of someone they call Crazy Haggerty, a man they’ve seen stumbling drunk down the sidewalk, wearing a magician’s suit and red shoes. There’s more to James Haggerty, the reader learns over the course of the novel: former professor, practitioner of Irish witchcraft and grieving widower. He does like his whiskey, though, and keeps a f...

Stony River by Tricia Dower
"A startlingly realistic story, Stony River follows three adolescent girls – Linda Wise, Tereza Dobra, and Miranda Haggerty – on their perilous journey towards womanhood while living in New Jersey in the 1950s. Each of these girls face different st..." Read more of this review »

"The nice thing about unravelling a Sudoku is: in the end it either fits or it doesn't; if a mistake has been made, whether by a careless realignment or a lapse in logic, it's clear that I've got it wrong. When trying to put together the shards of..." Read more of this review »

Wonderful book, beautifully written, about a terrible time in history. I loved the perspective of an old man looking back on his childhood in Hong Kong during the Japanese occupation during WWII. Knowing he survived made the reading bearable.

The Water Beetles by Michael Kaan
"I really enjoyed reading this book and learning more about the occupation of China during WWII.

This book was told as flashbacks, which I am grateful for. The only way I could get through reading about the past was the promise that the main charact..." Read more of this review »

Not sure if I can recommend this to everyone. My writer friends may appreciate the author's skill. Others may find the story disturbing and frustrating. You never really get an answer to what happened. It focuses on two women, Yolanda and Verla, who ...more

"Charlotte Wood's fifth novel is a disturbing yet beautiful and thought-provoking exploration into the misogyny lurking beneath Australia's good-natured, laid-back, egalitarian image. It is inspired, in part, by the Hay Institution for Girls, "an o..." Read more of this review »
