P.W. (Paul) Catanese is the author of fantasy-adventure novels (published by Aladdin/Simon & Schuster). His next novel, DONNY'S INFERNO, a supernatural adventure, will be published in early 2016.

A crisp style, fast pacing, interesting characters and vivid descriptions have made Catanese a favorite with everyone from reluctant readers to teachers to adults seeking a thrilling escape. His books have been turned into acclaimed audiobooks, and translated into many foreign languages.

In its starred review, Publisher's Weekly said “Catanese dazzles in the first of the planned Books of Umber...Catanese packs a lot into the book: rich characterizations, well-choreographed action sequences and genuinely surprising twists at the end. An auspicio

For example, the idea for the BOOKS OF UMBER trilogy came right out of thoughts I had while writing my fairy-tale inspired book. Also, ideas come out of nowhere - I really could not tell you what prompted the idea for DONNY'S INFERNO. My advice is to read a lot, and learn as much as you can about a lot of things. If you get even a hint of an idea for a plot or a premise, think about it over and over again, and just start writing.

If I have written a 'controversial' ending, then it's the one for this story - I get a lot of interesting messages about it. But your reaction tells me that it carries a big emotional impact, and I think the story has earned it by the time you reach the end.

The Umber world is certainly ripe for more storytelling. if you read my earlier books, you'll find that you are poking around in different corners of that world, reading some of the places and creatures that Umber has encountered, and even meeting some familiar characters. I would not rule out a return to this world, though I am currently occupied with other ideas. Thanks for reading! - PWC(less)

Getting translated

One of my favorite books of recent years is "The Shadow of the Wind", which was written in Spanish and translated to English. It was beautifully written, and obviously there are two people who deserve credit for that: the original writer, and the translator. While I was reading that story, I thought about the special challenge involved in working on a foreign language translation. Above all, yo... Read more of this blog post »

oh no, I didn't notice this question for three months! There will likely be just be the two books. Think of them as the resolutions of Donny's father issues and Donny's mother issues. And mostly, thanks for reading!

“Once an idea is out and about, it can't be called back, silenced or erased. You can't contain it, any more than you could put the head of a dandelion back together after the wind has scattered its seeds.”

“The worm hissed. "You said it couldn't see!" shouted Oates, forgetting Umber's instruction to be silent. He shook a fist. "We all heard it, Umber! You specifically said, it couldn't see!"
"I know-isn't it wonderful to learn something new?" Umber laughed.”

“Enjoy yourselves. And Hap: Don't let Umber near the arrows and bows; he's liable to shoot himself in the nose." Dodd grinned and snapped the reins, and the carriage rolled away.
Umber sniffed. "One of his lesser poems. Come, Hap.”

What book shall we read in July?
I have chosen books that are getting a lot of attention, or the authors have other Newbery honors, and were published in January and February. My hope is that a lot of libraries might have them in their shelves by now.

If you get the chance, check and see what your library has before you vote.

Tripleguess Wow, I'm honored! Thank you for adding me as a friend!

I'm a picky reader btw, and I hesitate to pick up a book if it seems the author enjoys torturing characters/readers X) but I always feel safe with yours. Thank you very much for sharing your stories. =)
