Mobile Friendly

I just found out that Google basically looks at non-mobile friendly websites and blogs and says, “You suck.  Go away.”   I don’t want to suck, so I’m trying to make damonalan.com as mobile friendly as possible.  Please bear with me while a few changes happen here and there.  You know… like a major overhaul […]

Ideas are dangerous

I had an idea a few weeks back, one that has been consuming a lot of my time. I want to write a non-fiction book.  “What?!!”  Yeah… I know. I want to write a book called Why Space Matters about, you guessed it, why we should colonize our solar system and what the future is … Continue reading Ideas are dangerous

The future of space based astronomy

The James Webb Space Telescope Go check out their site, and be awed by how far astronomy has come in the last century.  Or in the last quarter century since the Hubble made it’s way into orbit. We are on the edge of discovering big things. The JWST sees in infrared light, which will enable … Continue reading The future of space based astronomy

A taste of Eislen’s state of mind

A taste of Eislen’s new outlook on life. If you remember in On the Shores of a Dark Sea, Eislen is returned to the ruins of Kampana to keep him out of the fight with Merik. He’s very bitter about the things that have happened to him. “Let’s go,” Elvanik said. “It’s our turn.” Eislen … Continue reading A taste of Eislen’s state of mind

Escape and Hope

The world today is a place that I didn’t expect to see when I grew up.  In the 1970s I believed that we’d be walking in domed cities on the Moon and taking once-in-a-lifetime vacations to Mars by now. Life has been a disappointment in a lot of ways when it comes to the development … Continue reading Escape and Hope

Critique groups

I intended at some point to write a post about critique groups. I was on a panel recently for critique groups presented by Pikes Peak Writers.  That’s my frumpy and unkempt self on the left, next to all those beautiful people. Who says I don’t walk in high circles?  :p Pikes Peak Writer’s website On … Continue reading Critique groups

Cars and Cards

I’m copying this entry I wrote over from the All or Nothing Blog because this is an important concept. Copied Blog Post: One letter different, but worlds of frustration apart. I love cards. I love the concept, the interplay of the rules, and the gatherings in friendship that cards creates. I love cars too!  The … Continue reading Cars and Cards

Pinterest

I’m a total Pinterest novice, but I have managed to create a board on there with art I have made for my series. Some of it I create simply to give myself a physical representation of what I think scenes or characters might look like it. Some of it is prototype art, including book covers. … Continue reading Pinterest

Going to read

In the last month I’ve moved.  I’ve worked on cars, unpacked stuff I probably don’t need, changed lighting in the new place, did some landscaping, created a website (this one), made a book cover… the list goes on.  I have three kids so of course it goes on! But I’m going to read a few … Continue reading Going to read

Shockwaves… shockingly slow.

I researched a supernova explosion for book 3 of my series, and found out something that surprised me. Supernova explosions don’t really eject matter that fast. 8 miles per second. For comparison, satellites orbit in LEO at about half that, and I believe the New Horizons spacecraft is heading toward Pluto at more than 8mps. … Continue reading Shockwaves… shockingly slow.
