Hi Patty, I'm so glad you enjoyed The Words between Us. :)

I do intend to write Sarah's story at some point (though I must tell you it wouldn't be published in the next couple of years or anything). I intentionally didn't answer some questions about her subplot because of that. In the meantime, she does show up briefly in a short story I wrote that takes place in River City which you can find on the Extras page of my website: https://erinbartels.com/home/extras/

I don't know if I will get to Dawt Pi's story, though I would love to tell it. In our current publishing climate, I don't know that writing her story would be wise. There is much criticism (some of it deserved) of white authors writing the stories of non-white characters, especially when they do not share a similar cultural background. If I wrote Dawt Pi's story, I would likely want to do it in tandem with a Chin author. While I have many Chin friends and have served their refugee community for a decade as an ESL teacher, ad hoc social worker, trainer for citizenship tests, and in other capacities, I have not actually experienced life as a persecuted minority or a refugee. In pursuit of supporting #OwnVoices, I would want to work with a coauthor.

Again, I am so glad you enjoyed the book!

Hi Denice!

The best thing is easy to answer: actually hearing from people who've read my work. It's been really rewarding to hear how We Hope for Better Things has affected people in just the way I hoped it would. :)

The hardest thing?...My expectations of myself have changed. When people have liked what you've written before, you don't want to disappoint them with the next thing. You want everything you do to always be getting better and better. But novels are odd things. They will all be different, so even if the writing is great, someone who liked one may not like another, or at least not quite as much.

This is something I know intellectually with my rational mind, but when I'm writing now, it's sometimes hard to keep in mind. So my expectations of my own work can become a heavy burden I have to willfully put it off and just immerse myself in the story.

Great questions! I hope you like The Words between Us!

Hi Anita. Do you mean you read We Hope for Better Things? I believe Things Left Unsaid is a Courtney Walsh title. :)

Either way, I hope you enjoy The Words between Us. And yes, I do have more books coming out. In January 2021 will be All That We Carri See Full Answer
More of Erin's books…
“Change happens when the cost of keeping things the way they are is too high.”
Erin Bartels, We Hope for Better Things

“Each time, when I hear what comes out of my mouth—so inadequate, so small compared to what I had experienced while reading—I feel like I’ve snatched the story from the author’s hands and trampled it underfoot.”
Erin Bartels, The Words between Us

“And at that moment, on a nondescript tan couch in an impeccably clean living room at Twelfth and Seward, Nora fell in love with the wrong man.”
