Mary E. Pearson is the NYT bestselling and award-winning author of eleven YA novels and one novella. Her works include the completed trilogy, The Remnant Chronicles, which in a starred review, Publisher’s Weekly called “masterfully crafted.” Her favorite activities as a child were climbing tall trees imagining she was a hero in some fantastical world, or running along fence tops and roofs pretending she was a spy with a bagful of amazing gadgets. She was rarely herself. Amazingly, she never broke a bone until she caught a basketball in gym class. Catching real balls was not her forte. These days she continues to live in make-believe worlds she creates in her books. Her latest 2-book series, Dance of Thieves, allows her do all kinds of dange ...more

1. Read. A lot. Of course if you're on Goodreads you're probably already doing that. Yay!
2. Reread your favorite books a second or even a third time. On rereads you can see more of the structure of the book and just "how" the author builds this story that captured your attention.
3. Write. Try to write everyday if you can, even if it's only a few words. It keeps the creative juices churning. Writing begets writing. My mantra on days I am not in the "mood" to write is "just write ten words." Butt-in-chair is the hardest part, and ten words always turns into more.
4. Become your own best critic. Step away from your finished manuscript for a while, and when you return to it, revise with a fresh eye. Find a like-minded group of writers like yourself and trade critiques. Listen for recurring suggestions and questions. Those are probably your weak areas and every writer has them.
5. That said, don't expect perfection with a first draft. It may only look like a big lump of clay at first--but now the fun begins. Second, third, fourth (and many more drafts) are where you get to play with this clay and shape it into something beautiful.
6. Don't give up. I have seen many aspiring writers give up on their manuscripts half way through because they feel lost. I call it the muddle. Don't feel like it's just you--we all feel like this--with every single book. Keep going. Trust the process. You will find your way.
7. Now go write! Even if it's only ten words!(less)

A Few Thoughts on Ageism in YA

(note: I was originally asked to write this piece for another venue a while back, but because of a scheduling miscommunication, I was able to post it here instead.)

Ageism in Hollywood is no secret. Actress after actress, after screenwriter, after director has called it out. Screen great Helen Mirren called it “fucking outrageous.”

No argument there.

But is there ageism in the YA industry? Of cour Read more of this blog post »

Hey guys, so 2018 is almost ending (*cries*) and I still have tons of books that I haven't read yet. I'm currently reading Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater and I'm planning to finish The Raven King soon after. But my question is, since I'm really indecisive to choose which, please help me choose which book should I read next?? If you haven't read any of these, please just choose the ones that seems interesting. Thank you! :D

Kathryn hi, I just read your book "addoration of Jenna Fox" and I loved it!
I just have one question that has been bugging me ever since I finished reading the book. Dane, what's his role in this book?
First I thought he was like Jenna but I'm not sure.. I'm really confused.
