The Mega Thanksgiving Leftover Sandwich
It’s nearly time to raid the post-Thanksgiving fridge, babes! While you’re pulling out containers of leftover turkey and stuffing, reach for Duke’s Mayo too, because honestly – is it even a sandwich without the tang of Duke’s mayo? (Honestly, not really.)
Uncontroversial opinion: the BEST part of Thanksgiving dinner is the leftover sandwich we’ll eat for lunch on Friday.
Sure, sitting down to the whole pomp and circumstance of a tablescape, carved turkey, and piles of fixins is a wonder.

Cliff Notes: The Origins of Sweet Potato Pie
Welcome to a new series here on Joy the Baker called Cliff Notes, authored by, my favorite baker and my favorite Cliff – MY DAD! Dad is the inspiration behind the classics here on the blog. You know him and love him for his Chocolate Chip Cookies, and Buttermilk Pancakes and he’s also author of, casually, the best Sweet Potato Pie on the planet. Let’s here how this famous pie came to be from the man, the myth, the legend himself – Clifford Wilson.

Goodbye, Bakehouse.
This is a story with a happy ending.
I bought The Bakehouse in 2016 two years after I moved from Los Angeles to New Orleans. I spent a very memorable year living in the French Quarter where Tron became the unofficial mayor of Royal St. He’d lord over the block on his second story balcony where tourists would stop, point, and take his picture from the street. Honestly, it was the respect he deserves.

Baked Polenta with Burst Tomatoes
Let’s make dinner. The sort of dinner that warms the house with the oven, quiets the mild with a skillet to occasionally stir on the stovetop, and prepared in just enough time to have a glass of wine and empty the dishwasher while dinner warms and simmers. This perfect quiet weeknight dish is easy baked polenta with a simple burst tomato sauce. Cozy on up!
Friends, hi! It’s the time of year I rediscover all the sweaters I’ve had tucked away for most of the year.

Let It Be Sunday, 441!
Hello, friends! Happy Sunday! I hope that you are finding small moments where you are able to access peace and joy, or something close to it. I suspect I am not the only person feeling heartbroken and exhausted by the state of the world right now. I feel helpless in so many ways: I’ve given money and sent my thoughts to friends, I’ve called my representatives, and I’ve tried to listen and learn about this complicated situation, and to check my own biases and feelings.

Let It Be Sunday, 440!
Friends, hi and very good Sunday to you. How have you been this week? Heavy, right? I’ve spent the week doing my normal weekly tasks – things that felt entirely silly and incredibly privileged considering the violence in Israel and Gaza. It’s been a rough week, really.
I remember starting these Sunday posts after ISIS murdered journalist James Foley. I just thought – it’s important that we recognize that we’re all human together and life is so much more than cookies and kolaches.

Apple Butter and Cream Cheese Kolaches
I’ve entered my kolache era. Here’s a classic kolache recipe using an enriched dough made with yogurt for a super tender, extra fluffy bun. Its filling is cream cheese and apple butter, but any fruit spread you love will be delicious!
I’ve been in Texas well over a year and… I can’t believe it took me so long to get here. I’ve learned a few things the hard way and Will (my Texas sponsor) has always been quick to gently correct me.

Let It Be Sunday, 439!
Hello, friends!
What do you have cooking this fall? I’ve been twiddling my thumbs waiting for the weather to finally change so I can bust out all the chili recipes and cozy sweaters. On the personal goals front, I’ve been trying to do more activities on my own. This afternoon I’m going on my first solo hike; and I’m using that term loosely because I will most likely be walking at a moderate clip on a safely populated path.

Let It Be Sunday, 438!
Friends, hi! It’s Sunday and also somehow October 1st. I, for one, am not asking too many questions about this year. I’m certainly not asking things like HOW? Frankly that’s none of my business. That’s G’s J.
Running coaches (I have one because I use the Nike Running app) tell runners to look straight ahead. Looking up, looking down at the literal flight of my feet?
