Anne E.G. Nydam has been writing poems and creating imaginary worlds since the age of six. If asked at any point since then what she wanted to be when she grew up, she would have answered, "a writer." Her love of language led her to major in linguistics at Yale University, but this was followed by an unexpected but delightful ten-year detour into teaching middle school art.
Ms Nydam is now a stay-at-home mother, artist, and writer. She lives with her family outside of Boston. She is a poor housekeeper, as is only natural in someone with so many more interesting hobbies to pursue.

Please join her at her blog on relief block prints and juvenile fantasy: Black and White, Words and Pictures.

While researching renaissance wood block prints I came across Sebastiano Serlio, an architect whose 1551 volume of designs for decorative doorways is sometimes called in its English translation, "The Extraordinary Book of Doors." The moment I read that I pictured an ancient book full of doors that could become magical portals... Of course, that cart was well before its horse; I still needed characters, a setting, and a plot, but the inspiration was there!

Little tidbits of information often catch my fancy and get jotted down in case they might come in handy some day - for example, the Beetle Bulletin in "Kate and Sam and the Cheesemonster" was inspired by the statistic that one quarter of all animals alive on Earth right now are beetles - but "The Extraordinary Book of Doors" is the first time I've written an entire book inspired by one trivial snippet!(less)

Words of the Month - C Food Special

I’m always getting curious about random words that catch my attention, and looking up their etymologies.  It happened to be a strange coincidence that a bunch of words I recently looked up were all food words that started with the letter C, and so, my friends, we have ourselves a theme.  Since there’s really no more method behind my madness than that, let’s get started without further Read more of this blog post »
