Mosiah 16

    1.   Today’s reading, Mosiah 16, suggests to me that it isn’t mere honest, sincere error that God punishes, but actual rebellion.   The wicked, says verse 2, are those who “would not hearken unto the voice of the Lord.”  (The would not here probably isn’t a simple past tense of the verb to be; [Read More...]

Eleven-year-old football sensation

Time well spent

I always feel that, if I’ve been to the temple on a given day, it’s been a good and productive day whether or not I accomplish anything else.   Today has been a good day.   We participated in a Spanish-language session, which was fun.   Posted from San Diego, California

Tales from the Dark Side

Today is the fifty-first anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.  I’m an officially certified geezer now, and I can still remember aspects of that day — and of the days that followed — with considerable clarity.   Many still puzzle over that assassination.   A few of us, however, are puzzled [Read More...]

“President Obama’s Immigration Order: The Right Thing in the Wrong Way”

Here’s someone who agrees with the substance of Mr. Obama’s immigration decree, but disagrees with the method by which he’s imposing it:   http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/a...   I, too, have called for separating the substance from the manner.  One might even think that President Obama is right, and that Congress was wrong, but, if the [Read More...]

Evil Muslims, most likely.

Before you condemn Islam for the actions of the jerks who did this (and who’re probably Muslims), remember that their victim (as so often happens in such cases) is himself a Muslim.   An imam, no less.   http://www.haaretz.com/news/national/...   Thanks to Allen Hansen for bringing this story to my attention.   “If [Read More...]

A waste of good champagne?

Back on 17 March of this year, a team led by John Kovac of Harvard University held a press conference to announce that it had found cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) left over as a weak remnant of the Big Bang in which the universe as we know it came to be.   [Read More...]

Mosiah 15

Today’s reading, Mosiah 15, forthrightly declares that “God himself shall come down among the children of men, and shall credeem his people” (15:1).   Verses 2-5, however, have caused some perplexity.  They seem unclear, and some have felt that they’re inconsistent with modern Mormon “tritheism” and even with mainstream Trinitarianism.  That, in fact, [Read More...]

“A Treasure from the Past: Elder Henry B. Eyring’s 1994 Remarks on the Mission of FARMS”

From time to time, I’m told that the Brethren were upset with “the old FARMS,” and that that’s why they ordered my dismissal from the Maxwell Institute, the successor-organization to FARMS, in 2012.   However, I know for a fact that no such order was given.  And I’m aware of no evidence to [Read More...]
