Spotted at the Barnes and Noble

While perusing the magazine rack at B&N tonight, I noticed a few odd things. The fact that there are multiple magazines dedicated to the "wristwatch lifestyle", whatever the hell that is, for one.  (Seriously. It's a watch. If you are building your entire life around your watch, even if it's a nine pound Tag Heuer that Tiger Woods sprinkled with diamonds before three-wooding it into the fourteenth hole at Augusta, you have made a serious miscalculation in your priorities somewhere along the l...

Le Banni

Congrats to the mysterious Henscher (who in his secret identity is a good friend) on the release of his graphic novel Le Banni . You can catch the trailer - yes, it's a graphic novel with a trailer - here.

Things Learned Tonight

1) The North Carolina Symphony is quite good.
2) Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh is a lovely space to see a concert.
3)Tonight's featured soloist, a baritone named Randall Scarlatta, was a marvelous performer who unfortunately reminded Melinda and myself of nothing so much as the guy from the Bugs Bunny cartoon who ends up warbling down the Hollywood Bowl after being taken in by Bugs' impression of Leopold Stokowski.
4)Mahler is the goth kid of Classical composers, and by "goth kid" I mean "rea...

Oops

I'm clearly dating myself here, but when Melinda and I hauled out "Stonehenge" for Rock Band tonight, I had a terrible thought halfway through the song.

"Holy crap," I said to myself. "I'm drumming for Spinal Tap. STOP THE SONG BEFORE I-"

Found: Two boxes of matches

I found them on my nighttable, in a repurposed pencil cup that holds, well, things. They're from the Keg, a Canadian steakhouse chain, which means they're from Montreal. Which trip, out of the many? I have no idea. Every trip I go there, ritual dinner with esteemed friend Lucien Soulban and whatever other merry souls feel like joining us. There's one in the Old Port, around the corner from my usual hotel. When we have dinner there, it's generally the two of us, and we talk writing all night o...

Random Observation #46

There is something ineffably sad about a lone man sitting by himself at a large table at a buffet-style Chinese restaurant.
