They go happily into the washing machine as pairs, and they emerge bereft and partnerless. It's like the Bermuda Triangle in there. As the plot for a book it's a little thin, but one could imagine an evil sock-eating washing machine - perhaps in cahoots with a posse of other delinquent white goods. 'Revenge of the Microwave'? 'The Devilish Dishwasher'?(less)

Well worth four stars. A gripping yarn that rarely lets up on the tension, putting its protagonists into life-threatening predicaments in the skies and on the ground of the beautiful but inhospitable southern reaches of Venezuela. It's very much a no ...more

Picked this up to read as a new (1665!) perspective on what the world is going through today with the Covid 19 pandemic. Because our current science has not yet caught up with this new disease, we are to some extent in the same boat as the poor Londo ...more

Re-read this and enjoyed it again. It takes quite a long time for the plot to get going, and for a while one is inclined to think that Dickens is going off at tangents for the sake of it, but the strands are all eventually tied up in masterly fashion ...more

This book confirms in spades all that we already knew about the awful Trump. The writer uses the sport of golf as a litmus test to display Trump's hypocrisy, ignorance and immorality. Funny - but also depressing that a country could be conned into el ...more

Just read this again. Mostly Dickens at his best. Striking characters, scintillating language and extended metaphors. A few lapses into sentimentality (Bella Wilfer in her later phase) but that's Dickens for you.

Voice-driven storytelling that convincingly captures the conversations of two surprisingly lyrical Irish hard men. The beauty is in the language, the ugliness is in the dysfunctional and violent lives they have led. I found it funny and sad in turns, ...more
