Readers rock, and book people are, in my experience, the best, most empathetic, most curious, intelligent, passionate and interesting people.

But this is a multi-level answer for me, so I have more to say...

I'm a voracious reader, and have been since I was a kid hiding under my covers with flashlight and a book, way past my bedtime. I love books, love reading, and have always been in awe of writers. So, on that level the best thing for me about being a writer is just that...I am amazed and so grateful to be one! To find that I have the ability to do the thing I most love and admire, is amazing.

On yet another level, the best thing about being a writer is the ability to take my own observations, experiences, struggles, et cetera, and make them into something that can reach another human being--to entertain them, make them laugh, cry, think...and ideally, to lift them up a bit, help them feel less alone, and deepen their understanding of themselves, the world, themselves in the world.

Finally, I'll bet everyone says this--day-to-day the best thing about being a writer is the ability to work from home in very comfortable clothing! (Not pyjamas, I swear, unless I'm sick.)(less)

Marley by Jon Clinch
"I was in the very fortunate position to read an advance copy of this book, and I should start by saying that I am a true fan of Jon Clinch. I am also a great lover of Dickens, and so I approached this book with initial caution. There is nothing worse" Read more of this review »

“My demon is you. My best and worst is about you: how I need you and fear for you, how I fear for myself if I lose you, how I have let myself be defined by you.”
Danielle Younge-Ullman , Everything Beautiful Is Not Ruined

“Nothing guarantees happiness. I’m not certain happiness should be the goal. Satisfaction, maybe. A sense of purpose. Contribution. Authenticity. Happiness? It’s a lightweight goal. And meanwhile, I suspect that turning away from yourself will guarantee the opposite of happiness.”
Danielle Younge-Ullman, Everything Beautiful Is Not Ruined

“I wonder whether I will ever breathe air that is clear of his ghost.”
