In late July 1943, World War II is in full throttle when Italian dictator Benito Mussolini is overthrown. His close friend and long-time admirer, Adolf Hitler, is convinced that Catholic Church and Pope Pius XII are behind the coup and determines to do something about it.

Even though he is himself a catholic, and his physical and mental state are deteriorating, Hitler revives an earlier plot, Operation Pontiff. The plan calls for the Wehrmacht to invade the Vatican and kidnap the Pope.

He selects one of his top Generals, supreme SS Commander of Italy General Karl Wolff to put the plan into effect. Wolff feigns support for the plan but secretly takes actions to postpone its beginning.

Other top German officials in Italy become involved along with some high officials of the Vatican itself.

A lone Catholic priest from New Orleans who studied at the Gregorian University and now works for the Vatican becomes a key figure in thwarting the plot’s implementation.

Germany occupies Rome and events and actions become fast and furious as certain factors play out to the novel’s conclusion.

If you enjoy reading World War II history, ‘Kidnap The Pope’ by Jack DuArte needs to be in your library. Great writing with intense research has allowed the author to present in an easy to read journal format a scenario that depicts Adolf Hitler’s attempt to invade the Vatican and capture Pope Pius XII. This book is written to the best of the author’s ability from both German and Vatican points of view. The author says, “History is a most sacred gift and should not be distorted in any manner.”

‘Kidnap The Pope’ is book six in Jack DuArte’s World War II series. Although a series, each book stands alone. In this book there are eighteen easy to follow chapters set up in a diary/journal format. The time frame ranges from March 10, 1938 through Sunday, April 30, 1945.

Historical characters include heroes, heroines and adversaries from America, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Russia and the Vatican in particular. At the end of the book, the author offers a detailed list of the characters with their title, location, dates, ages and historical significance.

Each chapter starts with date, location and often the character or characters of importance. For example: August 23, 1939, Cabinet Room, West Wing, The White House, 1800 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington, District of Columbia “All right, Mr. President.”

There are so many examples of the author’s style and content that I would love to share with you. The author’s research has allowed him to share letters, memos, wire cables, and other documents that detail historic thoughts and conversations of historical importance. One example is on Friday, September 4, 1939 at the Polish-German border “a Franco-British meeting determined that no major ground or air operations would be undertaken against Germany. Great Britain did indeed send bombers over Germany to drop propaganda leaflets and make reconnaissance of the areas, but no direct contact with the Germany military was ordered.

Adolf Hitler had reached out to Mussolini when he originally planned the assault for August 26, but cancelled the attack when the Italian dictator told him that Italy was not prepared to go to war at that time. Mussolini later assured the German leader of his political backing and the order to attack was rescheduled for September 1st.

Adolf Hitler knew he was taking a big chance when Germany attacked Poland.  Many of his generals were not in favor of the move and asked for more time to get the Wehrmacht better equipped for battle. On several occasions prior to the beginning of hostilities, France had insisted that the Poles not mobilize and that factor helped the Germans easily overrun the poorly equipped nation.

The Second World War had officially begun with the appeasement governments of both Britain and France afraid to take more than token steps to prevent Hitler from seizing additional territory. The United States was quick to condemn Germany’s action but President Roosevelt was determined to keep his country out of the conflict.

The world settled back to see what came next to the world stage and in what form.”

Another great example is on Sunday, December 7, 1941 in The President’s Private Study, White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington, District of Columbia. “Mr. President, the Japanese have attacked our fleet at Pearl Harbor a few minutes ago. Our first reports indicate hundreds of Japanese fighter-bombers. We already know there is significant damage on Battleship Row. Admiral Stark at the Navy Department is trying to determine the consequences of the attack. All I can tell you is that it is bad, really bad…”

Enjoy reading for the first time or refreshing your memory with historical events like President Roosevelt’s famous speech made on December 8, 1941. “Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The White Mouse was the name given by the Gestapo to Nancy Wake Fiocca, an Australian woman setting up escape networks from France during WWII. After fleeing to England, The White Mouse joins the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) and returns to occupied France around the time of the Normandy invasion in 1944.

Through sheer determination and with the help of other SOE operatives, she manages to bring together a number of Maquis units in the Auvergne Region to harass and delay German reinforcements attempting to reach Nazi coastal defences.

Aided by an American Army captain on loan to the SOE, the White Mouse finally arranges the escape of a number of Maquis prisoners during a pitched battle. The White Mouse reunited US Army Captain Brian Russell with his French Resistance love that was brought to life in Jack DuArte's first novel, the best-selling The Resistance.

Jack DuArte is a native of New Orleans with a varied career in writing. DuArte attended Jesuit High School in New Orleans and worked for the Times-Picayune as a teenager. After attending the University of Kentucky and later graduating from the University of Evansville, DuArte served as an Air Force officer in Vietnam and received the Bronze Star for his efforts. He returned to New Orleans in 1971 and went into the wine business. He also authored a weekly column called Gastronomy for the Times-Picayune for a number of years and later hosted a radio talk show for WWL.

DuArte later enjoyed a full career in the wine business where he owned several Napa Valley wineries.  DuArte always enjoyed a long time love affair for the thoroughbred horse industry and returned to Kentucky in 2001. He is an owner and breeder of thoroughbreds.

What makes you proud to be a writer from Lexington, KY? Lexington, KY. I attended the University of Kentucky here and live here.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? I have been writing professionally since I was 14. The first time I saw my byline was my inspiration.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? In the late 1970’s and 80’s. I started writing historical fiction around the turn of the century.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? Not really.

Do you come up with your title before or after you write the manuscript? Always before.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? Historical fiction. Because I believe readers want some substance to what they are reading. By basing my works on historical events and people who lived through those events, I provide a great deal of historical information in a readable and exciting format.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? I have had two best-selling novels, Spitfire and The White Mouse.

Have you had a negative experience in your writing career? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? I get some bad feedback from readers about the editing and some of the facts in my books. Some of them are even correct in what they say.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? To have had eight of my books published.

Have you had a negative experience in your publishing journey? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? Nothing but lack of acceptance from a number of agents and publishers before I hit it right.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Don’t stop trying.

From a humble beginning in Newark, New Jersey, a short stay at a convent in Morristown, NJ at the age of fourteen, retiring from a fantastic career for a play broadcasting company in Carlsbad, California, to the rural foothills of the Sierras of Yosemite National Park, Sandra traded in the Board Rooms for the Ballrooms of the Regency period and never looked back.

She wrote her first book at the age of fifteen and since then she has always traveled with pen and notebook and writing experiences. It has been the journey of ten thousand miles with a few steps left to go. It was a pleasure to leave the corporate world behind decades later.

Sandra also has contemporaries in the pipeline. That said, she loves to write. Romance is at best a gift and her passion is the Regency period. Admittedly, she would prefer to be the sister of a duke or an earl...perhaps even a princess? Or the other endless possibilities of a widow. Hmmm.

Not being able to time travel, she now writes about what she loves and it has been worth every headache and heartache. She has been blessed with a great content editor, Cindy Davis, and a lot of helpful The Wild Rose Press staff. For a new author, it was nothing she expected, but everything she dreamed.

Sandra is prolific writer and continues to hone her craft. She devotes some of her time to writing novels of contemporary romance geared to the older heroines and believes that romance is not necessarily the province of the young. Not The Last Dance and Someone I Used To Love are two such novels.

What makes you proud to be a writer from Coarsegold, California? Living in Coarsegold, California in the foothills of the beautiful Sierra Mountains, we are in the gateway to Yosemite National Park. Coarsegold is considered a village with a population of about 7,000 people, where people know each other. I live in a home owners association managed by a General Manager and a Board of Directors. I was a former President of the Board and a few other associations so I have a network of many friends and acquaintances. It’s exciting to have people proud of me. When I was President of Ladies of the Lakes, a non-profit organization, the gals got used to my reading a chapter or two from one of my novels, year after year, after year. What or who inspired you to become a writer? My English teacher in East Side High School, Newark, New Jersey. His name was Dr. Julius Bernstein. My current husband, Ronald, as I mentioned has supported me all the way. He used to read mystery thrillers, but when I asked him to proof my chapters, I hinted he could help me more, if he read the genre. So he started with Nora Roberts, and now reads mostly Regency novels at the rate of one every four days. We agreed that OUR goal was to see me published and we made it happen, along with a lot of other wonderful people.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? In 2011, I decided it was time to hone my craft and do whatever it took to get published. My parents were first generation immigrants and they thought college was a waste of time for a woman. Marriage and babies was what they envisioned for me, so I did not attend college. But I worked hard at a career, raised my children, and went to school nights and got various degrees. Each was a step along this fabulous journey.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? Yes and No. There is a future story that ruminates in my mind about immigrants from Italy, my grandparent’s home town, and things I’ve gleaned along the way. As I mentioned above, the short stay at the convent was a memorable experience in my young life. I thought I was dedicated and eventually decided, I was meant for another career.

Do you come up with your title before or after you write the manuscript? The manuscript was written and it had many titles along the way, but one night I woke up, and I had a vision of a title on the ceiling of the bedroom.    Once Upon a Duke was born.  All my subsequent books have had a similar metamorphous. I’m sure I drive my editor crazy, but when something hits you in the gut, you know you have to react.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? My introduction to romance was no accident. As a little girl, we liked to stage imaginary plays and scenes, and I loved swashbuckling heroes and heroines. That naturally led to reading such books. I tried other genres, but I always returned to Romance. Regency Romance intrigued me because it was such a large landscape to write about. While I also write Contemporary Romance, and have a number of books ready to polish, my first love is and always will be Regency England, France, Italy, Spain, in the 1800’s. That era is so rich in intrigue, betrayal, conflict, redemption, and of course, ultimate love.

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book that you are seeking promotion for? I’m a visual person and I tend to look at a portrait or a picture, and I’m drawn into it as if I were that person. I write about strong, independent, high spirited woman who buck the trend. During the Regency period, women were no better than chattel—a horse, a cow, a sheep. These women do not want to walk behind their men, they want to be alongside as helpmates. Sometimes my alpha heroes don’t realize it, but reformation does take time, and the romance helps it along the way.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? I believe I’ve demonstrated to my children and grandchildren, if you never give up your dream, you can achieve it.

My younger son, Sam, said to me at one time, before I got published, “Mom, I can’t remember when you ever stopped writing.” And here I am, decades later, having this fantastic experience. I laugh sometimes about my rules, which I may have borrowed along the way.

Rule Number 1: Never Give up.
Rule Number Two: Remember Rule Number One.

Have you had a negative experience in your writing career? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? A bad marriage at the time and a difficult divorce. The emotion tears you apart and you have to pick yourself up and start anew. I tend to be an optimist, and have been brought to my knees. And then I think: This is a good place to pray from.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? The turnaround my current husband Ron took when it recognized it was no longer a hobby for me, but a PASSION to keep on going, not to let anything deter me. I have many writer friends who say that their husbands couldn’t care less. It took a good many years and now he is as ardent as I am.  In many ways it has enriched our marriage of over twenty years and is a journey we both share and love. I know he’s proud of me, as I am of him. The acknowledgment from friends who knew how long it took me to get to this place warms my heart. Not to mention, the positive book reviews. Your first book is like “your first baby.” So precious.

Have you had a negative experience in your publishing journey? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? I had written a trilogy contemporary three books and it involved the casinos of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Many, many years ago. I sent the manuscript to a possible agent and she was so negative about a lot of things. Decades ago but I remembered when she criticized the fact that I didn’t even know what I spoke of. She said my writing about the hero bringing the heroine a blueberry bagel was ridiculous. There weren’t such things. Turns out, bagels are available in many flavors and variations and I’d purchased them. Plus I was married to a Jewish husband. To reject an entire novel on the basis of that premise hurt. I stopped writing for a while, but then climbed back on board. A few years later. I still have those books and one day they will see the light of day.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors?  Work hard to hone your craft. It is a career. If you wanted to be an engineer, you’d go to engineering school. Likewise with writing, never stop learning and become an example to others. Never give up.

Who is your favorite author and why? There are so many, but if I had to choose it would be between Judith McNaught and Mary Balogh.  From Judith, her style and her phrases draw you into the story with the first paragraph. You become the heroine. From Mary, the sense of history, the brilliant characterization and the wonderful plots. I admire Julia Quinn, Sarah MacLean, Tessa Dare, Jane Porter, Sarah Richmond, Debra Salonen and so many others.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us? I am always amazed at the generosity of spirit of most romance writers.  I expected that there might be some who would not offer any help for fear of competition, but I was SO pleasantly surprised.  I was blown away with the encouragement of my own editor and my publishing company. They want me to succeed and do what they can, but it is up to me to write good novels and to also promote them.

Then they peeked above the sarcophagus to check that the coast was clear before creeping out. They both looked toward the back of the room, where the voices had disappeared.

Adam pointed to a door standing ajar. The door was labeled with an Arabic inscription. “What do you think it says?” he asked, as they walked quietly to the door, giving occasional sideways glances to check they were still alone.

“Um … I have no idea,” Justin said. “It’s probably a notice for the museum staff. That door looks like a fire escape. I think those men we heard went down there.”

Justin pushed the door all the way open. A set of stone steps disappeared into inky darkness. If the men had gone through the door, then there was only one way to go—down.

Frightened and excited, they hesitated on the top step, unsure of whether to investigate.

Justin turned to Adam. “We should follow and see what they’re up to, but you know we’ll get into the worst kind of trouble if we’re caught.”

Adam gave a nervous nod.

Justin grinned. “Then let’s go. We just have to risk it.”

What teen boy wants a girl tagging along, getting in the way? Justin and Adam rolled their eyes at each other behind her back, but they followed her. Girls. Once they had some idea in their heads, they didn’t give up.

Kim peered behind the trashcan at a small pile of garbage. “There’s something here,” she cried. “I can see an animal.”

“Don’t touch it,” Justin advised her. “It might have a disease.”

Kim ignored him. Crooning softly, she crouched down and pulled away some pieces of soggy newspaper. Underneath the paper lay a small, shivering mound.

“Look, a dog.”

“Be careful—” Adam began to say, but he was too late.”

Cold Coffee Press Spotlight Interview With Author Fiona Ingram
Fiona Ingram's earliest story-telling talents came to the fore when, from the age of ten, she entertained her three younger brothers and their friends with serialised tales of children undertaking dangerous and exciting exploits, which they survived through courage and ingenuity. Haunted houses, vampires, and skeletons leaping out of coffins were hot favourites in the cast of characters.

Although Fiona Ingram has been involved in the theatre and journalism, writing a children's book--The Secret of the Sacred Scarab--was an unexpected step, inspired by a family trip to Egypt.

The tale of the sacred scarab began life as a little anecdotal tale for her two nephews (then 10 and 12), who had accompanied her on the Egyptian trip. This short story grew into a children's book, the first in the adventure series Chronicles of the Stone. The second book in the series--The Search for the Stone of Excalibur--a huge treat for young King Arthur fans, is now available with Book 3, The Temple of the Crystal Timekeeper, on the way. Although Fiona Ingram does not have children of her own, she has an adopted daughter, from an underprivileged background who has discovered the joys of reading for pleasure.

Naturally, Fiona is a voracious reader and has been from early childhood. Her interests include literature, art, theatre, collecting antiques, animals, music, and films. She loves travel and has been fortunate to have lived in Europe (while studying) and America (for work). She has travelled widely and fulfilled many of her travel goals.

Fiona Ingram was born and educated in South Africa, and has worked as a full-time journalist and editor. Her interest in ancient history, mystery, and legends, and her enjoyment of travel has resulted in the multi award winning The Secret of the Sacred Scarab, the first in her exciting children’s adventure series—Chronicles of the Stone. Fiona has recently completed the second book entitled The Search for the Stone of Excalibur, a treat for young King Arthur fans. She is busy with Book 3 entitled The Temple of the Crystal Timekeeper.

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from South Africa? For many people, including many South Africans, being off the beaten track, so to speak, can be limiting in one's reach - especially when trying to make an impact in the world of writing. Being published in the USA as well as Japan, and soon China is something any writer can be proud of.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? We always had books in the house, my parents were both readers, and since South Africa only got television in 1976, when you were bored, your parents usually said, "Go read a book!" Books have been a big part of my life since I can remember learning to read, and I think that was the inspiration.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? Actually I've been published for years as a free-lance journalist, but writing and getting a book published only happened a few years ago when I went to Egypt with my mom and my two young nephews, and decided to write a short story for them about our trip. The short story became a book which became a book series.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? Both environment and upbringing played a big part in my writing. I used to write plays for my brothers and me to act out for my long suffering parents. I also made up ghost stories for my younger brothers and their friends to entertain them. We had so many books that it was impossible not to love reading. Writing was a natural next step.

Do you come up with your title before or after you write the manuscript? I came back from Egypt, took a pen and writing pad one evening, sat and thought for a bit, and then wrote The Secret of the Sacred Scarab in red pen across the first page. That was how it began - the title first.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? I write Middle Grade fiction and although I also write historical romance under a pseudonym (Arabella Sheraton) and animal rescue stories, I love Middle Grade adventure. My young nephews fell into that age bracket when we went to Egypt and I think their awe and wonder at seeing the ancient splendour of Egypt, their excitement, how they found each day an adventure really struck me. This is the best time for kids, to learn, explore, and enjoy. I hope my books reflect that.

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book that you are seeking promotion for? My first book, The Secret of the Sacred Scarab, was inspired by our trip to Egypt and the heroes by my two young nephews. The second book, The Search for the Stone of Excalibur, is the continuation of the adventure and came about because by the time I'd finished the first book, I realised my young heroes had not saved the world yet. There was still more adventure to be had.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? Actually seeing the story and characters come to life, seeing each book completed, and planning the next one.

Have you had a negative experience in your writing career? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? I think every journey has some negative aspects. The only negative thing was when I sent out my first manuscript to 35 British agents, thinking in my total naivety that I would be hailed as the next JK Rowling. What a letdown when 33 wrote back (many just the standard rejection letter) to say no thanks, but two replied to me personally, said I could definitely write, and I should persevere. So I did.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Winning book awards and having people tell me how much they or their kids loved my book! Having my book published in other countries like Japan and soon China.

Have you had a negative experience in your publishing journey? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? When I first started out I made mistakes through sheer ignorance and spent far too much money on the wrong kind of marketing. Better luck second time around. I think I have honed my marketing plans.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? One thing new authors tend to ignore or think is not that important is having a superbly polished product. That is the biggest mistake ever. Make sure, above all else, that your manuscript reaches the highest standards of the publishing industry. Pay for a top editor, someone who has your interests at heart; don't cling to the bits you love, listen to an expert who knows how a book should read - fluently and fluidly with no errors.

Who is your favorite author and why? I have so many books and I enjoy so many authors that I can't actually choose one. But if I had to share the title of one brilliant book it would be The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins. It has intrigue, murder, mystery, great plot development, superb character development, interesting plot devices, multiple points of view, and is just a totally satisfying read.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us? The biggest challenge facing authors today is feeling (quite rightly) that they will never make a dent in the industry, that their books will never be discovered, and wondering are they wasting their time writing. If a book is well written, with an intriguing plot and compelling characters, then it will be discovered. It might take a little longer, but most ‘overnight successes’ took a lot longer than overnight, even the Big Name Authors Writers must never sit back once a book is out there. Do something every day to spread the word about your book, either online or by word of mouth. Even if it is just one Tweet. And in the meantime, carry on with your books; keep on writing.

How many published books do you have? As a Middle Grade author I have two in my adventure series with the third one pending (and more on the way). As a romance novelist, I have seven books. As an animal book author I have two books.

Like so many in our mobile society, Anne had left her upper middle class town to live, work, travel, get married and have children away from her small town roots, family and friends. At age forty-seven Anne finds herself back in her hometown, where very little has changed. As bad as the small town rumor mill is, time has added a cyber aspect where it seems everyone ‘knows’ and this increases Anne’s pain, guilt, frustration, devastation and anger that her husband has left her for a ‘man’.

Anne prided herself in knowing just the right word for every situation. What word will come to mind after her high school friend Amanda dies? Amanda’s casket had just been lowered into the ground when Anne finds herself alone in an Attorney’s Office starring at Amanda’s final message on video. Almost in a trance, Anne leaves the office with the inheritance held tightly in her hands as questions swirl around in her head.

Connie whose marriage had also taken a bad turn, is a welcome old friend that makes herself at home in Anne’s childhood home. Connie and Anne reminisce, eat, drink, explore Anne’s mother’s secret room and slowly go through and digest the inheritance that Amanda has left.

Together Annie and Connie tap into what they call “our inner bitch” to deal with the cards that life had dealt them. Intrigued by a “game” that Amanda started and manipulated by the detailed instructions left by Amanda; this game engages them in “harmless” cyber fun that allows Annie and Connie to toy with the emotions and even love interests of mutual acquaintances.

I always quote a couple passages from the books that reads, so here goes.

P56 “power is great because it makes you the dominatrix. The psychological manipulator, which is the perfect description for what Amanda was.”

P150 “As we sat there judging and discussing our generation we were ridiculously oblivious to our own behavior. Apparently women often do not realize they are addicted until they are in a heap of trouble, and we were no exception.”

You must read this book to see exactly what was included in the inheritance that Amanda gave Anne, what was involved in perusing Amanda’s game and what if any consequences, real or imagined in life and in cyberspace.

M.C.V. Egan’s book ‘The Bridge Of Deaths’ is unique because the author is driven by childhood memories, family stories and perhaps the spirit of her grandfather who died when an English aircraft (carrying 5) crashed on August 15, 1939. Her exhaustive research, passion for details and networking abilities brings this fiction (based on real events) to life from archives buried during the chaos of World War ll.

Characters like Bill, Maggie and Catalina draw us into their world with conversations and settings that bring the reader to the table, quenches the thirst for love at first sight romance and delves into a quest for knowledge that reaches into the paranormal realm that few of us would dare venture into.
If you like historical fiction (eliminating dry facts) the time frame and mystery behind this historical plane crash and family tragedy will keep you turning the page. The use of skype conversations was creative and the historical documentation such as the use of actual Western Union Telegrams validates the truth behind the fiction.

I personally would have loved to read more about the author’s family and especially her grandfather’s life and see more photos. Understandably this book is mystery based on a tragic historical event and is not a biography. After reading this well thought out, painstakingly researched fictional accounting of a historical event that few of us even know about, I only have one question. Where will M.C.V. Egan take us in a sequel and what nugget of information might be unearthed by the publication of this book?

The blending of facts with mysticism to arrive at the truth is a payoff even for a reader who holds a skeptical view of the paranormal, use of hypnosis and past-life regression.

Cold Coffee Press Spotlight Interview With Author M.C.V. Egan
M.C.V. Egan is the pen name chosen by Maria Catalina Vergara Egan. Catalina was born in Mexico City, Mexico in 1959, the sixth of eight children, in a traditional Catholic family.

From a very young age, she became obsessed with the story of her maternal grandfather, Cesar Agustin Castillo--mostly the story of how he died. She spent her childhood in Mexico.

When her father became an employee of The World Bank in Washington D.C. in the early 1970s, she moved with her entire family to the United States. Catalina was already fluent in English, as she had spent one school year in the town of Pineville, Louisiana with her grandparents. There she won the English award, despite being the only one who had English as a second language in her class.

In the D.C. suburbs she attended various private Catholic schools and graduated from Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, Maryland in 1977. She attended Montgomery Community College, where she changed majors every semester. She also studied in Lyons, France, at the Catholic University for two years.

In 1981, due to an impulsive young marriage to a Viking (the Swedish kind, not the football player kind), Catalina moved to Sweden where she resided for five years and taught at a language school for Swedish, Danish, and Finnish businesspeople.

She then returned to the USA, where she has lived ever since. She is fluent in Spanish, English, French and Swedish. Maria Catalina Vergara Egan is married and has one son who, together with their five-pound Chihuahua, makes her feel like a full-time mother.

Although she would not call herself an astrologer she has taken many classes and taught a few beginner classes in the subject. Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Florida? I am originally from Mexico City and have lived in a number of places but Florida has been home for a quarter of a century now, and I love it. Hemingway loved it so what’s not to be proud about?

What or who inspired you to become a writer? My affair with words began at a very early age. As the 6th of 8 kids sandwiched between all the males in the house I had a serious need to communicate. When I was 12 we moved from Mexico City to the Washington D.C. area and I had a HUGE list of pen pals, I know that it was through the art of letter writing that I discovered my passion for the craft.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? Okay? Dare I answer? Years ago I went to a psychic who said; I don’t think you realize it yet, but you are a writer. I went home and looked at my boxes of notebooks and journals; I had imagined myself a published writer before that, but that day it felt plausible, real you know.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? YES and YES! As I said before my very large family made me search for a voice a strong voice and in THE BRIDGE OF DEATHS the strong influence of researching my grandfather’s mysterious death in a 1939 plane crash which is the central storyline.

Do you come up with your title before or after you write the manuscript? If I do it very often changes, sometimes a story ends up guiding you to a title.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? To be honest I write in a variety of genres. I can tell you that I am not capable of good fantasy or Sci Fi as much as I love reading said genres. But I can KILL and I can LOVE, and turn a story into chick lit, romance, murder mystery. Lately I am toying with one act plays.

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book that you are seeking promotion for? It was in 1993 when I first held the British Airways LTD. Files in the UK and the archivist RIP to whom I dedicated the book said to me, “Can of worms you are about to open young lady.” I just knew a can of worms always makes for a good story and good book.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? There are frankly so many I cannot pin-point one. The mere process of writing is so healing and frustrating. It is all a bit like loving a complicated person. I can tell you the worst, editing and re-writing, that is tough!

Have you had a negative experience in your writing career? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? I did not expect five star reviews and they poured in, so I took them a bit for granted, and then the searing first bad review was a ONE STAR. It felt horrible! I decided to give it as much attention and promoting as I had all the positive reviews. The encouraging feedback was an amazing experience and that one star review became a favorite, of course I prefer good reviews but my negative reviews have made me grow and explore how I can improve.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? The good reviews of course!

Have you had a negative experience in your publishing journey? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? There is growth from everything and what might not be great for me is good for others so I am going to stick to the golden rule; “If you don’t have something good to say…” To any writers out there, research your options carefully and contact authors privately with your questions. In a private forum I do voice my negatives.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Trust your own personal unique voice. The same story can be told in a million ways, but it can only be told YOUR way by YOU.

Who is your favorite author and why? I have to first say that I have MANY, especially a lot of great Indie authors I have met in the past three years. However I will give you my ALL TIME classic. W. Somerset Maugham, the why is simple, his stories are phenomenal and timeless. However I also have this goose bump thing to share. In 1948 he wrote the book CATALINA which is my middle name and the one I have always gone by. (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/99662.Catalina) His book starts on an August 15th and the Plane crash my grandfather died in (the one in The Bridge of Deaths) was on an August 15th, once you get around chapter four Catalina visits a priest to confess and he is Father VERGARA, my maiden name! Now Catalina is far from Mr. Somerset Maugham’s best work, it is not Of Human Bondage or the Razor’s Edge. No Painted Veil, but even at his not so good, OMG the guy was amazeballs.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us? I have three blogs and I welcome writers and artists as long as it is not Erotic Art or Erotica writing. I am a mom and I think that my son is at an age where he still needs to learn more by example than anything and that is my reason to avoid that. But all others are welcome for a spotlight or an interview at 4covert 2overt A Place in the Spotlight and for my other two blogs I like people with a historical angle, any era, and any theme. I am happy to welcome any of your members whose genres fit.

Linda Diane Wattley is a published writer who began her first work of art with poetry. The poem, "I Wish" appeared in the Poetry Gem of the American Poets Society. For over twelve years she had her own religious/philosophical column in the Frost Illustrated Newspaper titled "The Best Will Show Themselves".
Linda has appeared as a contributed writer for the online magazines including: Faith Writers, The Wright Side of Me Productions, The Blessed Room and Cheers where she shared Inspirational and thought provoking messages to readers. She is also a contributing of anthologies: The Triumph of My Soul edited by Elissa Gabriel and This Far by Faith with Vanessa Miller as editor. Today, God has awakened her to a new and extremely important message to share with the world.

We must become more conscious of PTSD, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder; she is presenting her newest work: Soldier with a Backpack, Living and Dying Simultaneously. This work reveals the reality of the impact this disorder has on our veterans and civilian people's lives. It takes you deep within the soul of the inner dynamics of this disorder. Stress and Trauma is guiding us farther away from love.

What makes you proud to be a writer from Akron, OH?I am proud to be a writer because it gives me an opportunity to share my heartfelt desire to make a positive difference in the world.

What or who inspired you to become a writer?My eighth grade English teacher encouraged me to become a writer because she saw a lot of potential in me when I expressed my thoughts in classroom assignments.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage?Yes definitely, my upbringing was dysfunctional and soul-damaging which showed its damaging affects showed up as I became an adult. Writing allows me to make sense of things and understand my own inner-dynamics.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? In 2008, I had a life-changing experience when I was reading a book by Dr. Phil “self-Matters”. It had a section where I answered many questions. By the time I finished I was falling apart inside with the realities it revealed about my childhood experiences of abuse. The experience was so overwhelming it sent me to writing to relieve the pain and devastation that seemed to want me to die. I wrote a trilogy relating to my growing up stages of life. This was the beginning of self-healing and discovery.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process?Most rewarding for me in my writing process is what I come to learn about myself and the experience of healing that takes place as a result of seeing me on the inside.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey?Most rewarding for me recently is the feedback I am getting from my readers. My message is strengthening and creating a platform for spiritual renewal.
How many published books do you have? I have five published books, but I only focus on one because the other four were stolen by my publisher. I never received any money for my efforts.

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book (one book) that you are seeking promotion for?What sparked me to write “Soldier With A Backpack Living And Dying Simultaneously”, was facing the reality that my son who served two terms in Iraq has Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and I have had it since childhood. His last episode forced me to research this disorder and what I discovered forced me speak out for him, myself and all those with by PTSD.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors?Trust your unique word. Somebody out there is waiting to read your work.

Who is your favorite author and why?I actually do not have a favorite author. I love unique work.

After a moment of silence, they looked at each other, puzzled, and then listened a bit longer to make sure the men had gone. Then they peeked above the sarcophagus to check that the coast was clear before creeping out. They both looked toward the back of the room, where the voices had disappeared.

Adam pointed to a door standing ajar. The door was labeled with an Arabic inscription. “What do you think it says?” he asked, as they walked quietly to the door, giving occasional sideways glances to check they were still alone.

“Um … I have no idea,” Justin said. “It’s probably a notice for the museum staff. That door looks like a fire escape. I think those men we heard went down there.”

Justin pushed the door all the way open. A set of stone steps disappeared into inky darkness. If the men had gone through the door, then there was only one way to go—down.

Frightened and excited, they hesitated on the top step, unsure of whether to investigate.
Justin turned to Adam. “We should follow and see what they’re up to, but you know we’ll get into the worst kind of trouble if we’re caught.”

Adam gave a nervous nod.

Justin grinned. “Then let’s go. We just have to risk it.”

Cold Coffee Press Spotlight Interview With Author Fiona Ingram


Fiona Ingram's earliest story-telling talents came to the fore when, from the age of ten, she entertained her three younger brothers and their friends with serialised tales of children undertaking dangerous and exciting exploits, which they survived through courage and ingenuity. Haunted houses, vampires, and skeletons leaping out of coffins were hot favourites in the cast of characters.

Although Fiona Ingram has been involved in the theatre and journalism, writing a children's book--The Secret of the Sacred Scarab--was an unexpected step, inspired by a family trip to Egypt. The tale of the sacred scarab began life as a little anecdotal tale for her two nephews (then 10 and 12), who had accompanied her on the Egyptian trip. This short story grew into a children's book, the first in the adventure series Chronicles of the Stone. The second book in the series--The Search for the Stone of Excalibur--a huge treat for young King Arthur fans, is now available with Book 3, The Temple of the Crystal Timekeeper, on the way. Although Fiona Ingram does not have children of her own, she has an adopted daughter, from an underprivileged background who has discovered the joys of reading for pleasure.

Naturally, Fiona is a voracious reader and has been from early childhood. Her interests include literature, art, theatre, collecting antiques, animals, music, and films. She loves travel and has been fortunate to have lived in Europe (while studying) and America (for work). She has travelled widely and fulfilled many of her travel goals.

Fiona Ingram was born and educated in South Africa, and has worked as a full-time journalist and editor. Her interest in ancient history, mystery, and legends, and her enjoyment of travel has resulted in the multi award winning The Secret of the Sacred Scarab, the first in her exciting children’s adventure series—Chronicles of the Stone. Fiona has recently completed the second book entitled The Search for the Stone of Excalibur, a treat for young King Arthur fans. She is busy with Book 3 entitled The Temple of the Crystal Timekeeper.

Interview: 

What makes you proud to be a writer from South Africa? For many people, including many South Africans, being off the beaten track, so to speak, can be limiting in one's reach - especially when trying to make an impact in the world of writing. Being published in the USA as well as Japan, and soon China is something any writer can be proud of. 

What or who inspired you to become a writer? We always had books in the house, my parents were both readers, and since South Africa only got television in 1976, when you were bored, your parents usually said, "Go read a book!" Books have been a big part of my life since I can remember learning to read, and I think that was the inspiration. 

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? Actually I've been published for years as a free-lance journalist, but writing and getting a book published only happened a few years ago when I went to Egypt with my mom and my two young nephews, and decided to write a short story for them about our trip. The short story became a book which became a book series. 

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? Both environment and upbringing played a big part in my writing. I used to write plays for my brothers and me to act out for my long suffering parents. I also made up ghost stories for my younger brothers and their friends to entertain them. We had so many books that it was impossible not to love reading. Writing was a natural next step. 

Do you come up with your title before or after you write the manuscript? I came back from Egypt, took a pen and writing pad one evening, sat and thought for a bit, and then wrote The Secret of the Sacred Scarab in red pen across the first page. That was how it began - the title first. 

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? I write Middle Grade fiction and although I also write historical romance under a pseudonym (Arabella Sheraton) and animal rescue stories, I love Middle Grade adventure. My young nephews fell into that age bracket when we went to Egypt and I think their awe and wonder at seeing the ancient splendour of Egypt, their excitement, how they found each day an adventure really struck me. This is the best time for kids, to learn, explore, and enjoy. I hope my books reflect that. 

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book that you are seeking promotion for? My first book, The Secret of the Sacred Scarab, was inspired by our trip to Egypt and the heroes by my two young nephews. The second book, The Search for the Stone of Excalibur, is the continuation of the adventure and came about because by the time I'd finished the first book, I realised my young heroes had not saved the world yet. There was still more adventure to be had. 

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? Actually seeing the story and characters come to life, seeing each book completed, and planning the next one. 

Have you had a negative experience in your writing career? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? I think every journey has some negative aspects. The only negative thing was when I sent out my first manuscript to 35 British agents, thinking in my total naivety that I would be hailed as the next JK Rowling. What a letdown when 33 wrote back (many just the standard rejection letter) to say no thanks, but two replied to me personally, said I could definitely write, and I should persevere. So I did. 

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Winning book awards and having people tell me how much they or their kids loved my book! Having my book published in other countries like Japan and soon China. 

Have you had a negative experience in your publishing journey? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? When I first started out I made mistakes through sheer ignorance and spent far too much money on the wrong kind of marketing. Better luck second time around. I think I have honed my marketing plans. 

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? One thing new authors tend to ignore or think is not that important is having a superbly polished product. That is the biggest mistake ever. Make sure, above all else, that your manuscript reaches the highest standards of the publishing industry. Pay for a top editor, someone who has your interests at heart; don't cling to the bits you love, listen to an expert who knows how a book should read - fluently and fluidly with no errors. 

Who is your favorite author and why? I have so many books and I enjoy so many authors that I can't actually choose one. But if I had to share the title of one brilliant book it would be The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins. It has intrigue, murder, mystery, great plot development, superb character development, interesting plot devices, multiple points of view, and is just a totally satisfying read. 

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us? The biggest challenge facing authors today is feeling (quite rightly) that they will never make a dent in the industry, that their books will never be discovered, and wondering are they wasting their time writing. If a book is well written, with an intriguing plot and compelling characters, then it will be discovered. It might take a little longer, but most ‘overnight successes’ took a lot longer than overnight, even the Big Name Authors Writers must never sit back once a book is out there. Do something every day to spread the word about your book, either online or by word of mouth. Even if it is just one Tweet. And in the meantime, carry on with your books; keep on writing. 

How many published books do you have? As a Middle Grade author I have two in my adventure series with the third one pending (and more on the way). As a romance novelist, I have seven books. As an animal book author I have two books.

On the morning of April 10, 2013 the nuclear guided missile cruiser USS California left Norfork, Virginia heading toward Charleston, South Carolina. Once there the ship would anchor at Fort Sumter for a ceremony commemorating where the first battle of the Civil War took place on April 12, 1861.
After the ceremony Captain Ashley Patterson would deploy her ship to the Persian Gulf, but as it turns out, time can be unpredictable.

Author Russell F. Moran like so many authors before him wrestles with science fiction and time travel to the extent of what would happen if we could go back into history and change just one event.

He thanks his friends Bill Holland, Nick Wartella and his wife for their fresh perspective, input and editorial analyses. He also gives appreciation for invaluable technical input from his friend Lloyd (Hoss) Miller, Rear Admiral, Retired, United States Navy. Admiral Miller was the first commanding officer of the USS California, the ship that plays the pivotal role in the story. Admiral Miller makes a cameo appearance in the book as the strong leader, likeable person and gentleman that he is in real life.

The author is quick to point out that this is a work of fiction and with all fiction imagination plays a pivoting role. At the very start the reader is introduced by name to 55 major characters who bring the story of ‘The Gray Ship’ from the blue-green swells of the Atlantic Ocean through a port-hole (worm hole) that will not only change history, but tens of thousands of lives.

His characters are realistic as with Captain Ashley Patterson while in her astute position wrestles with her own inner demons. Who right now or in our future might want to go back in time to abolish war or the worse acts of humankind?

When faced with the dilemma of being forced back through time into a dark period of American history, Captain Ashley Patterson and her crew had to risk mutiny or at the very least commit treason. If and when they could make it back to their own time, how would they be judged by friends, family, the military and the world?

Who would believe their story? One of my favorite quotes from the book reads, “Dr. Weinberg,” said Admiral Miller, “Do you believe these stories?” “It isn’t my job to believe stories or not to believe them, Admiral,” said Weinberg. “It’s my job to assess whether the witness believes his own story. But I will say this. I don’t know much about this time travel stuff, but ever since I worked on that book with Jack Thurber, I’ve noticed that I’ve developed an obsessive compulsive disorder. I never step on a crack…it may be a wormhole.”

Reading ‘The Gray Ship’ has left me wanting to read this authors other three books; A Time Of Fear, The Skies Of Time, and The Thanksgiving Gang. The Skies of Time is a book about time travel, love, and commitment.

Newly promoted Admiral Ashley Patterson is on a public relations flight with her husband, author and Naval Reserve Lieutenant. It involved a sideswipe car accident in which his client’s husband, a famous political journalist, was killed. The case looked almost routine from a liability point of view. The eyewitness evidence pointed toward negligence.

From here things go uphill, downhill and sideways and it seems the whole world goes to “H” in a hand basket. What makes you proud to be a writer from Long Island, New York? A lot of published authors live on Long Island, and I’ve gotten the chance to meet a few of them.  

What or who inspired you to become a writer? A teacher in High School and my wife.  

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? 2010  

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? Yes. I have a background in law and the military. I’ve used these backgrounds in my writing.  

Do you come up with your title before or after you write the manuscript? After the manuscript or sometimes part of the way through.  

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? Science fiction/time travel and detective thrillers.

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book that you are seeking promotion for? I first get an idea and then jot down story “beats,” or a rough outline of what the story is about. Then start writing. After that, the full story starts to show up.  

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? Praise from friends.  

Have you had a negative experience in your writing career? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? One star reviews from Internet trolls on Amazon. I have absolutely no idea how to avoid them.  

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? The Gray Ship a Kirkus Indie Best books of 2013  

Have you had a negative experience in your publishing journey? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? Allowing myself to get stuck. I don’t do that anymore. I avoid it by writing, not dwelling on plot problems. They tend to resolve themselves.  

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Read On Writing by Stephen King, and The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. Then, dispel the notion that there is any such thing as writers block. It doesn’t exist unless you convince yourself that it does.  

Who is your favorite author and why? Nelson De Mille. Great story teller with a conversational voice.

Dropping to the ground, his knees buckle and the forest seems to spin haphazardly around him. Expecting to find a waterskin, he reaches for his side, but the warrior realizes he left it behind in his rush to clear his mind.

‘Guess it’s to the pond with me,’ he mutters as he gathers the orbs. Delvin grabs a fig off the banyan tree as he jogs to the west where he knows a decent-sized pond can be found. As he moves through the forest, his mind wanders to thoughts of his friends who he hopes are still recovering in Nevra Coil. He is struck by a pang of guilt for not letting them know that he arrived at Hamilton Military Academy. The warrior can only imagine how angry at least one of them might be considering it has been over a week since he left the other champions. His thoughts continue down a path of worry, so he is caught by surprise when he comes to the pond and finds a slender figure with short, black hair at the shore.

Delvin sees pointy ears and what he thinks is a red shirt, which causes him to skid to a stop and nearly crash into the woman. His battle-honed reflexes are the only thing that allows him to spin to the side and avoid a humiliating collision.”

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Long Island, NY? I never really factored in my location before, so I think I’m just proud to be a writer in general. Long Island is where I grew up, which does have a level of familiarity and comfort that helps me keep some semblance of sanity when writing. My time in Upstate New York and Florida helped me grow as an author too, but there is definitely something about being back here that soothes me when I’m stressed.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? I’ve loved writing since I was a kid, but it wasn’t until I read books by Fred Saberhagen that I decided to become a fantasy author. That was the spark and I’ve absorbed inspiration from so many other sources. Not just authors in my genre, but anything that tells a good story and entertaining characters. Timeless figures such as Conan the Barbarian or Indiana Jones really make me want to create something that will last long after the books are done.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? My second year of high school is when I outlined my first story and began writing with no clue what I was doing. It was about teenagers with super powers that protected the universe from evil immortals. I read a lot of comics back then. I didn’t go beyond self-publishing the first book through a Vanity Press and learning some hard lessons on how the industry works. By the time, I had designed Windemere and was improving through my college courses.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? There is definitely an environmental factor with my writing. I was never dissuaded from using my imagination, so I’ve retained a lot of the childhood wonder and craziness that I had in my youth. This helps me with world creation and coming up with monsters for my action scenes. I think it also helps me think on my feet, so I can handle plot diversions without running into a wall. There’s always an answer somewhere in my head as long as I remain calm.

Do you come up with your title before or after you write the manuscript? I come up with a title before I make an outline. Then I make a new title once I finish the outline. After that, I have a 50/50 shot of needing another title once I finish the first draft.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? My genre is Epic Fantasy. I really enjoy building a world from the ground up and I’ve always loved tales of magic. Fantasy is my comfort zone and I feel my strongest when writing in the genre.

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book that you are seeking promotion for? This is actually the 7th book of a series, so I’ll mention the spark for the entire LEGENDS OF WINDEMERE adventure. I was in a college Dungeons & Dragons game and I thought it would make a fun story. The other players agreed to let me be the group scribe and I started taking notes. Early on, I realized that a game doesn’t translate well to a book and I had the series go in a different direction. At this point in the story, we’re only seeing scraps of the final adventure in the game and everything else was created from various inspirations. In terms of the characters, I did a lot of alterations with permission from the players behind them. Especially with story romances because that didn’t really happen in the game.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? Interacting with readers through my blog and getting feedback. Discovering that readers are continuing with the series makes me happy since it’s nice to know people are getting invested in the adventure. My favorite thing to hear is if a person really connected to a character or an event caused an emotional reaction.

Have you had a negative experience in your writing career? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? The only real negative is that I feel like I waited too long before going the independent author route. It was something I kept wondering about, but didn’t look into it until 2012, which was 27 years after I decided to work toward being an author. I took many years off from my desired path and thought it would happen eventually, which was foolish and I do regret wasting all that time. This is by my own hand, so the only advice I would have to avoid it is for a new author to follow his or her gut. If you feel that a path is right or wrong then go with that instinct.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Seeing my book appear on Amazon after hitting publish and waiting for it to go live. I always get a thrill from that every time I do it. There’s this sensation of taking a big step that many people never get to.

Have you had a negative experience in your publishing journey? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? Being an independent author, everything is within my control, so I haven’t had too many negative experiences. Most of them were hiccups caused by my own lack of knowledge or taking a risk that simply didn’t work out. These are closer to disappointments that I’ve shrugged off and kept going. So I don’t think an author can avoid all negative experiences especially at the beginning. It’s smarter to accept that it will happen and keep pushing forward. Also to do your own research on promotional venues.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Never give up and stick to the story that is in your head. You know how it is supposed to work out, so trust in your own abilities. I’m not saying an author doesn’t evolve, but you need to remember that you’re the one in charge of your books.

Who is your favorite author and why? This changes so often for me. I could probably fill several pages with a list of authors that I love because I try to take something from each one. I love the world-building and mythology of Tolkien and Lewis. The solid character of Conan makes me enjoy books by Robert E. Howard. Mark Twain, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson, and the list keeps going for me. As long as the author writes a great story that makes me want to read it again, I’m hooked.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us? One of my biggest focuses in my stories is the evolution of my characters and how their adventures shape them. It has made it that the actual story isn’t so much ‘good vs. evil’, but how the heroes handle their roles. For example, Nyx is an extremely powerful caster and has worries that she is nothing more than a living weapon. This affects her actions and mentality, especially when somebody treats her like a tool. So each character has a fight for identity as well as against the outside forces that threaten Windemere.

How many published books do you have? I currently have 11 books published. 8 volumes of LEGENDS OF WINDEMERE, 1 fantasy poetry book, 1 horror novella, and 1 fairy tale/post-apocalyptic novella. The last three were experiments in genres outside of my comfort zone.

The Making of Jake McTavish by D. M. McGowan is an 1800’s western pioneering era saga that combines exceptional story telling with an historical tale told by Peace Country pioneer John Brown.
Well-developed characters and true to life settings with descriptive writing put the reader into the story. The main character Jake McTavish stands alone in his empty cabin with his thoughts that he voiced to his blue tick hound, “Maybe I’ll just have t’shoot somebody. That way the government will have t’ feed us ‘til they punch my ticket and bury me.”

Life had been especially hard since the murder of his wife. For the fourth year he must continue his Peace River trek in British Columbia (1898) to take the furs that he had collected by canoe down to Ft. St John. This is an important ritual as Jake trades bails of skins for cash to pay for supplies and to repair equipment heading into the new season. Times were hard enough without the ambush that knocked him out cold and took most of everything that he had in his camp.

Just 11 years ago “in the spring of 1887 Jake became a wealthy saddle tramp. He only had fourteen Canadian dollars, two U.S. dollars and eighty six cents, but he was rich in other goods. He had four horses, a fine, double rigged saddle, a short barrelled Colt pistol, a Colt Navy .36 and a Winchester rifle. He also had a serviceable pack saddle, bed roll, enough food to last a month and the pack covered with two tarps.”

By 1889 Jake had spent two years with the Cambridge Cattle Company and had accumulated some money. With a deep yearning for something more and the passing of the Canadian Homestead Act, Jake chose three hundred and twenty isolated acres in the foothills north of the Rocky Mountains. In the fall of 1891 with 15 yearlings to sell he met Anna Porenski. When she married him he no longer felt driven, because he had it all. Anna was raised on a farm, so ranch life came easy to her and she enjoyed gardening. The only thing missing are children for fate has refused to grant Jake and wife Anna a baby. To end such dreams Anna is murdered and the responding Mounted Policeman comes close to accusing Jake.

The year is 1885. Hank James has been in Canada several months panning gold from a stream near Roswell, British Columbia. When he hears a prizefight will be held in town, he attends along with everyone for miles around. With a little help from the fight referee, he wins big betting on the fight. Having realized that the life of a miner isn't nearly as romantic or rewarding as he expected, and with advice from the policeman who helped him win money on the fight, Hank goes to Farwell to haul freight with pack horses for contractors building the transcontinental railroad.
The railroad's security, a detachment of North West Mounted Police, have maintained across the West that no liquor be allowed one mile on either side of the rail bed. Provincial authorities disagree. Hank James believes in honoring and repaying his debts, but that doesn't mean he should be involved in a war between the BC Provincial Police and the North West Mounted.
He and his partners have trouble enough running their freight business, they don't need to be caught between competing policemen. They are already stuck between Canada's transcontinental railroad people and the contractors doing the actual construction. While the police are fighting one another, who is looking for criminals, particularly those stealing Hank's horses? Despite a variety of jobs, D.M. McGowan now works as a commercial driver and lives near Mile "0" of the world-famous Alaska Highway.

The Great Liquor War by D. M. McGowan is a western pioneering era saga that combines great story telling, true-to-life cowboy experience with US and Canadian history combined with legends from the 1800’s.
The main character Hank James was born in Canada and migrated south into the US with his family after the Civil War. Hank’s father headed towards Oregon in search of a farmstead while protecting his family from raids by outlaws and Indians. They made it as far as Kansas to find that the land was too dry to farm so pushed on to Oregon to find the land was too wet. With Mother Nature as their biggest obstacle and many mouths to feed young Hank James set out on his own. He settled down with his own gold mine claim near Rossland, British Columbia in 1984.
Hank wasn’t afraid of hard work, but he wanted more out of life than to eke out a living on his claim. With tenacity Hank took advantage of the Transcanada Railroad, found some partners and started his own freight business. Life should be good, but where there is industry, technology, commerce and economy, there are criminals.
In all my reviews I quote a passage so readers can get a feel for the authors writing style. I quote from page 37.
“It didn’t take a detective to know that the horse thief had played a little joke on the Provincial Police. Constable Art Hubbard was over six feet tall and probably ten pounds lighter than the one eighty mentioned in the description. Not only was he a long way from round, he was also clean shaven.I gave Constable Hubbard my story, ending with the recovery of the bay gelding and the description I had from Miller. “An’ the fella called himself Art Hubbard,” I added.
The Constable’s expression didn’t change. He worked his chew around into one cheek and sent a stream of tobacco juice into the waste basket. “Feller with a sense o’ humor,” he noted, and then added. “It’ll be one ‘o Bulldog Kelley’s outfit. They work out o’ some of the illegal saloons t’ be found back in the bush. We catch one or two of ‘em every now an’ then, but we can’t get Kelley, an’ he’s the head o’ the snake. I can think of one or two that might fit your description, but not a one that had a full beard. An’ this fella’s probably shaved by now.”
I wrote out my story, signed it, and returned to work.”
Between the horse thieves, authority over liquor sales and a war between the BC Provincial Police and the North West Mounted Hank is he in over his head? Only time will tell if he makes the right choices and will he win the heart and loyalty of Sharon Dalton?

Thomas Brash is trying to escape but knows he never will. Pursuing him is the memory of the family he lost to cholera. Dave was born in Collingwood, Ont. and have lived in Owen Sound, Caledon, Heathcote, (in BC) Ft. St. John, Vancouver, (back to Ont.) Jarvis, Oshawa, Windsor, (Alb.) Calgary, Ft. Saskatchewan, (BC) Kelowna and Dawson Creek. He has been a cowboy, forest firefighter, heavy equipment operator, farmhand, gardener, road musician and businessman. He lives with his wife, Karen, and children and grandchildren in Northern British Columbia, where he works as a commercial driver.
Interview:
What makes you proud to be a writer from Canada? I have received from readers and requests for another story.
I also take pride in revealing some of the past of this great country. Some strong people with great vision built this country but we seldom hear of them. They are the pioneers who came to a flat land of great distances, to a world of high mountain peaks, to winter’s cold or summer’s heat that was far beyond their comprehension and yet built something wondrous out of that, a world that we who live in it often don’t properly appreciate.
Those of us who look for it can gather information on politicians or major business leaders of the past but it’s difficult to find out about those who actually built Canada, the miners, loggers, cattlemen and farmers. People much like those who are continuing to make it work.
What or who inspired you to become a writer? Driven by a love of history I had gathered stories that interested me. In an attempt to feed and house myself and my family I enjoyed a variety of experiences through the years and turned some of those into stories as well. While we were traveling Western Canada playing music my wife and partner, Karen suggested that I should write some of those stories down. I did as suggested and found that what I enjoyed most was historical fiction.
When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? I began writing in 1990 but did not consider publishing until much later, perhaps 1995. My first was “The Great Liquor War” published in 1998.
Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? Yes, to both questions. As mentioned above I’ve had a variety of experiences and have used knowledge gained there in some of my stories. For example a common practice in the mountains is to build a cache of goods and supplies for later use either at a permanent or long term camp site or for use on an oft travelled trail. These caches are usually ten feet or more off the ground to save these supplies from the ravages of wildlife (primarily bears, wolves and coyotes). They may be no more than a floor or platform but are sometimes a log cabin high in the trees. I’ve never read mention of such in historical fiction or westerns and have included them in two of my stories.
Do you come up with your title before or after you write the manuscript? I generally make up some kind of a title so I can save it and find it in my computer. However in many cases I’m aware this title will have to be changed when I’m finished. The stories usually take on a life of their own and become something I had not intended when I wrote the first paragraph. “The Great Liquor War” was “Liquor Laws” in the beginning. “Jake’s Justice” (unpublished) started off with that title and turned out to be close to my original idea.
Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? Historical fiction or a “Western” with a focus on Canada. I enjoy reading good stories from the west but have found very few sited in Canada. Two or perhaps three writers have done excellent work with fiction on the Canadian West and that work is as entertaining as any in the world. Except for those few, however much of it is very hard to read, misleading and inaccurate.
There are billions of western novels out there but very few from “the North West Territories” or “the Colony of British Columbia.”
What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? The reviews I have received from many sites, the reviews from fans and the awards from Reader’s Favorite.
What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Help and suggestions from the marketing/promotion staff at Strategic Book Publishing.
Have you had a negative experience in your publishing journey? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? Traditional publishing houses who continue to place their focus on literature when entertainment is what has always sold.
Don’t waste time with those who want something other than a good story.
What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Write! If you have a problem which you wish to call “writers block” put that story aside and sit down and write. Start a new story, outline the person you want as a life partner or explain the one you have, write about your favorite pet or restaurant but write something. When you’re done or perhaps tomorrow go back and work on that story that’s giving you trouble.

If your furry friend could journal, what adventure would be told?

In this charming story, a standard French Poodle named Digby begins his narrative by describing his homeland in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, southern Africa. He reminisces in a nostalgic way about his birth and early life with his mom and being part of a litter of five.

With both human and animal characters in this adventure the reader needs to be aware of doggy language usually kept private between furry friends. It is fun to mentally log the use of the dog’s conversation about human hands (paws) human man (two paws) and boys (young pups), etc. For an example I quote Digby. “Later that day I was sitting down at the bottom of the garden in front of the gate wishing it to open; I knew the young pups would not be back to clean the fish’s home for quite some time.”

A story for all ages as curiosity leads Digby beyond the gate. This adventure lends to new friends, danger, survival and heroism as these canines must work together with two young boys (pups) to rescue a kidnapped girl.

Author E. D. Bird uses the knowledge and love of furry friends to write this fast paced, hard to put down adventure that will warm the hearts of all animal lovers with an ending that will surprise you in keeping with the nature of Digby. I look forward to reading more adventures from Digby’s Diary in the future.

Quote: "I was born in Scotland during 1955 and married in 1975. My parents immigrated to Zimbabwe (Southern Rhodesia as it was then) in 1957 and I have lived here ever since. I have two adult sons, the eldest of whom lives in New Zealand while the youngest, who has provided me with two grandsons, resides in England. I was divorced during 1987, but remarried the same person on the 20th anniversary of our original wedding date and we remain together living happily in Bulawayo with our two rescue dogs.

I am an animal lover and have over the years had a variety of pets including horses, dogs and cats, but I have to admit that dogs are definitely my favourites and at one stage had eight different breeds in my household.

I worked for a firm of attorneys for thirteen years and during the final three of those I studied law by correspondence, but was forced to give up my lessons after my divorce when I returned to my parents and joined the family business, a gold mining enterprise. Having been brought up in a rural mining environment and having been primarily involved in mining almost my entire adult life I have a sound base for the fictional events I have created in my books.

My favourite pastime is writing, but I am also an avid reader."

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Never give up, just keep going.

Who is your favorite author and why? Definitely Dean Koontz because he writes amazingly interesting and varied books where neither children nor animals are hurt in any way.  He is clearly an animal lover like me.
