Shattering (Island) Time Stop 6 -- Southlea Bay

Shattering (Island) Time Stop 6 -- Southlea Bay Okay so maybe you've not heard about Southlea Bay yet but let me tell you it's a fantastic island. They were pretty lucky to miss Hurricane Frances, as they are on the west coast in Washington State.

Let me introduce you to the owner of this special real estate, one of my best friends, Suzanne Kelman. Suzanne is my podcast partner on Blondie and the Brit and one of my favorite authors.
Suzanne Kelman and the Rejected Writers Take the Stage
SK: Thank you KJ for inviting me and the Rejected Writers over onto your Island tour.
We are also from an Island but not quite as fancy as your islands, or as my character Doris Newberry would say with a sniff, We don’t go in for a lot of that fufu fluffy cocktails and palm trees malarkey, we are more of a get out your hiking boots and make sure your wearing your waterproof underwear – kind-of-an Island!”
Though I have to admit I would rather be over on your tour KJ. So, I’m glad you invited me. Pass me the sunscreen and I will tell you about the gang over on Southlea Bay.
Here is a picture of our Island.
And here is a picture of the town of Langley that the fictional town of Southlea Bay is based on in my book series.
Langley, Washington

KJ: I've been to visit Suzanne in Langly and it is a gorgeous place full of magic and mirth. Tell us about the book launch this week Suzanne.
SK: The Rejected Writers are all very excited because just here on the right-hand side under that second awning is where we all will be kicking up our heels on June 6th to celebrate the release of the second book, Rejected Writers Take the Stage.
So, why don’t you pour me one of your fancy cocktails and we will get out of the sun on your beachand I will tell you and your readers a little bit about my new book.
KJ: Certainly Suzanne. I have something special for you a Banana Mama. Please, sip away and tell us more.

SK: The first book was called, The Rejected Writers Book Club and introduced the world to a group of eccentric and quirky characters that had formed their own unique book club. They celebrated in style every rejection letter they received from publishers. That is until a mystery and a mission heads them off on a wild cross-country road trip.
In this second book in the Southlea Bay series they are on another crazy ride but within the town itself. Here is a picture of the new book and a little bit more about the story.

  Available on Amazon click here!
After months of playing the lottery and hoping for an uptick in her dog-boarding business, Janet’s friend Annie must face the inevitable: the bank is foreclosing on her family farm. But thanks to the Rejected Writers’ Book Club, Annie doesn’t have to face it alone. With just a few weeks to raise the $20,000 that she and her fifty rescue dogs need to avoid becoming homeless, the writers need a fund-raiser, and fast. Much to Janet’s horror, Doris has another crazy plan.In a moment of inspiration, their fearless leader declares a solution: a musical extravaganza. No one in the group has ever produced a musical, but Doris will not be deterred—they’ll write it together. And with Flora, who has never sung a note in her life, as the lead and Janet as their reluctant director—along with a hypochondriac costume designer, a pyrotechnics enthusiast, and Janet’s very pregnant daughter pitching in—what could possibly go wrong?
KJ: Suzanne's second book in this funny and heartwarming series launches on June 6th. I'd love it if we all showed Suzanne some support and checked out the book. You can purchase your copy here!
SK: Let’s head back out into the sun KJ and I will show you a couple of my early reviews.
Rejected Writer's Take the Stage Reviews!   "This story made me laugh from the very beginning. I laughed and I cried throughout the whole book."

"If you enjoyed Suzanne Kelman' witty writing, you will have high expectations. And the author sure delivers. Yet again."

"Another hit for author Suzanne Kelman! Her quirky characters continue to entertain and make me laugh aloud."
Well, thank you for letting me crash your Island Tour KJ. It’s been fun, but I better get back and rally all the ladies of The Rejected Writers’ Book Club who are busy looking for glitzy outfits for the big launch party.

Enjoy the rest of your tour!
KJ: As always it has been a blast Suzanne! Best of luck with your book launch and I can't wait to get my copy on Tuesday!
Please join me next week as we head to Turks and Caicos Island for some more summer island touring and fun.

Shattering (Island) Time -- Stop 5 The Bahamas

Shattering (Island) Time Book Tour -- Stop 5 The Bahamas
Welcome to the Bahamas!

Photo courtesy of my author pal John Malik who is visiting The Bahamas now.  Visit him at http://chefjohnmalik.com/

Today I continue the Shattering (Island) Time book tour that is following the path of Hurricane Frances. The Bahamas was hit hard by this massive storm, that plays a key role in my upcoming release, Shattering Time. Frances was the first hurricane to hit the entire archipelago since 1924 and caused the near destruction of their agricultural economy.

We will begin our adventure on Pig Beach where we will swim with the pigs on this glorious day.

These friendly critters are thought to have survived from a shipwreck, possibly from pirates or even perhaps Columbus himself. On his second trip he brought animals on the journey. If I come back as an animal in my next life I'm putting dibs on these critters.

Once we've had our fill of piggy delight we'll take the boat over to one of the other cool and exciting destinations. I'll let you vote on what's next but first let me share with you two exciting #giveaways that I have going on that involve my book.

The Bahamas AdventureOkay, back to the exciting adventure we have awaiting us. Today we have the choice of heading to the following destinations:
1. Dean's Blue Hole -- on Long Island, and not the kind full of New Yorkers. It is the deepest blue hole in the world at 202 meters.
2. Lucayan National Park, that is named after the the Indians that originally lived on the islands fro 900 - 1500 AD. First we'll enjoy a tour of the smallish cave and learn about the wildlife within. Then a walk through the mangroves to the kayak area and enjoy a few hours of kayak adventuring until we relax on Gold Rock Beach for a swim and lounge in the sun.

3. In Florida at Discovery Cove I had the amazing adventure with my daughter to swim with dolphins. I'd love to do it again with you in Blue Lagoon Dolphin Encounter.

4. What about an Courtesy of John Malikadventure by plane to the bigger island of Nassau where I have reserved a horse drawn carriage called a surrey to get a tour of the history of Nassau and the ancient sites and forts.

5. For the financially adventurous we should offer the opportunity to visit the casinos on Paradise Island for some shows and gambling. The Atlantis Resort awaits!

Shattering (Island) Time Book Tour -- Stop 4 Cat Island Bahamas

Shattering (Island) Time Book Tour - Stop 4 Cat Island
Today on my Shattering (Island) Time Book Tour we visit the tiny island in the Bahamas where Hurricane Francis passed nearby in 2004 causing major damage to the Bahamas destroying most of its agricultural industry.

Cat Island Bahamas
In my upcoming release, Shattering Time, Ronnie is sent to Cat Island circa 1952 after a violent storm and subsequent shipwreck. Here is a snippet from that moment in Ronnie’s story in the world debut of her second-time travel experience in the series.

I present to you one chapter from Shattering Time--Mangled Mast.

The only sound Ronnie heard was in sharp contrast to her emotions. The soothing whoosh, whoosh of waves lapping on the beach. She held her breath and listened. The distant seagull cawing added to the feeling of the sea. There was a distinct fishy smell bringing her back to her childhood summers in Sandbridge.

Read more here! (Click on this link to take you to the google doc for the full chapter.)

Intrigued? Pre-order by clicking here and don't miss a thing!
Releases on June 27th but the price will go up. Don 't miss this great adventure!

Cat Island Cat Island is one of the most underdeveloped islands in the Bahamas alas making it a perfect place to explore without the crowds you will find elsewhere in the Caribbean. It was named after the pirate Arthur Catt, a pal of Blackbeard, and is about 48 miles long.  For me this is a perfect nearly untouched paradise of beachy goodness.

Need a visual? Here is a quick video and tour of the island. Note the band at the end around the campfire. We'll talk about that in a minute.

It holds some fascinating locations for us to explore. It also is the boyhood home to Sir Sidney Poitier, just outside of Arthur’s Town, which in itself makes it a magical place.
For those of you who know me you know I’m a mermaid-wanna-be and at my true bliss when submerged neck deep in a warm body of water.

What better place to start our journey today than Mermaid Hole ripe with legends of magical creatures that lurk about. Please vote on the next adventure on the island. You can decide what we explore next. Here are your choices.

   1.  Visit the other mysterious holes, or lakes each with their own legends. I will make you swim in the water though so be forewarned.
A variety of inland underground cave systems burst forth in various holes around the island each full of local legends. Boiling Hole is one that looks as if the water was boiling, due to a tidal condition. If you’re a local you may believe a sea monster is responsible for the water's movement. The allure of the surrounding mangrove trees and pool full of baby sharks and rays would make this a top priority for this mermaid.
In the Big Blue Hole, with its strong ocean current that connects it to the sea, lurks a horse-devouring monster where you will not find many locals. They especially will not enter the water for fear of this beast. Are you brave enough to take a dip with me?

2. Hermitage Stone Monastery on Mount Alvernia.

On the highest point the Bahamas (206 whole feet) this gorgeous place gives you a 60-mile view of the island. A miniature monastery built by Monsignor Jerome Hawes, called the Heritage, was built in 1939 to provide a sanctuary for meditation. The cliff is named after Mt. Alvernia in Tuscan where St. Francis received the wounds of the cross.

   3. Ruins of Deveaux Mansion and Armbriser Plantation

Colonel Andrew Deveaux was awarded this antebellum-style cotton plantation for protecting the Bahamas from the Spanish in 1783. If you're a history buff this is a great day trip.

   4. Beach Day at Fernandez Bay Village Bay

Rose and white sand beaches and the best snorkeling in the area await our adventurous water-loving hearts. Nearby are the mangroves home to land crabs and other interesting wildlife.
   5. Arthur’s Town – Boyhood home to Sidney Poitier at the Rake and Scrape Festival

Sidney Poitier was born in Miami but grew up on Cat Island in Arthur’s Town. Until he was 11  when his father moved them to Nassau towards  greener pastures (no, literally, he was a farmer.)

If you time it just right (for our purposes we will) you can enjoy the Cat Island Rake and Scrape Festival that is held annually to send one student to college of the Bahamas. Here we will immerse ourselves in local island tradition of a battle of local bands in the style of rake and scrape – homemade instruments wood, fishing line, tin tubs, saw players, conch horns, comb and even smoking goat drums that are heated by the fire and smoke as they’re played.

Here is a picture of one such unfortunate house after the flooding that devastated part of the island.

Thankfully today there are no storms in site today. I have a lovely picnic for us. But first a little smidgen of history on the island. It’s widely believed that San Salvador Island was the location that Christopher Columbus first made landfall in the new world. How cool is that? He chose the name that translates to Christ our Savior. In honor of Christopher and his discovery, we shall picnic near one of the many statues on the island on Long Bay named after the long boat Columbus used to reach the island. There is even an underwater monument where the anchor landed on October 12, 1492.

In our picnic basket today I am serving cracked conch salad with lime civiche. If you want to know about this delicious local favorite click here. The cooler has a few sandwiches if you're not a conch salad kind of gal or guy.
Conch SaladOver on Suzanne Kelman's blog she will share an excellent cold beverage for your enjoyment. Click here:
Plans for the day!Okay fun filed day ahead and here is your voting block for our San Salvador adventure. What is your pleasure? 1. A day at the Great Lake Preserve that stretches through the center of the island. 2. Or we could spend the afternoon exploring historic Watling's Castle, an 18 century Loyalist castle, a three story great house and other outbuildings plus the restored great house, named after George Watling. 3. If you're a snorkeler we'd have a great time exploring the islands on a boat with World Island Tours. 4. If you prefer more of an underwater adventure we can dive with Seafari. 5. Lastly, we can always just chill at one of the 200 sunny beaches and have a lazy beach day. Vote now!

Shattering (ISLAND) Time Blog Tour Stop 2 -- Puerto Rico

Shattering (Island) Time Blog Tour Stop 2 -- Puerto Rico

Welcome to my book promotion tour where we are on island time and everything is breezy and bright.

https://islandsofpuertorico.com/best-beaches-in-puerto-rico/

Today on stop two of my Shattering (Island) Time book tour we are in beautiful historic Puerto Rico on Playa Flemenco, a beach that tops the most lists for best beach in the world. If you missed stop one on the British Virgin Islands, click here and check it out.
The beach I’ve chosen had a close call with Hurricane Francis that is an important driver of the story line in my new release, Shattering Time. Click on the link to pre-order this soon to be best seller.

Click here to pre-order!

On August 31, 2004 Hurricane Frances’ outer bands brushed the coast of Puerto Rico. In the eye wall of the storm brewed 135 mph winds. This time Puerto Rico was lucky. During Hurricane Jeanne just a few weeks later (and the subject of my third book in this series) the storm devastated the island and the resulting damage and poor management destroyed their power grid.
Thankfully, today it is sunny with a light breeze and there is no hurricane in sight. I’ve got a picnic basket with some local fare ready for you. Please enjoy the mini empanadillas I’ve prepared.

Here is the recipe if you'd like to give it a try yourself.

Also, a fantastic and refreshing local fruit salad is in the cooler. Grab a bowl and sip on the ice cold Pina Colada over on Suzanne Kelman’s blog here. She is releasing her second book and it is hilarious, heart-warming and bound to be another international best-seller.

Here is a sweet little video on Puerto Rico if you’re in need of the full experience.

So next we need to decide what kind of fun we shall sink our teeth into next. Let’s vote on what we do first. Here are your choices.
1. Beach Day – Puerto Rico has 270 miles of coastline and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. We could spend the day on Playa Flemenco enjoying the surf and sand.
2. The third largest underground cave system in the world is the Rio Camuy Cave Park in Camuy. A day of exploring 200 feet underground would be extraordinary!
3. Another natural wonder worth exploring is El Yunque National Forest. It is the only rain forest in the US forest system with stunning mountain views and vast forests full of wildlife.
4. Puerto Rico has 3 of the world’s 6 bio luminescent bays in the world. Mosquito Bay in Viegues would be a spectacular show.
5. For the history buffs, we wouldn't want to miss historic San Juan with its 500 years of Spanish Colonial history and architecture.

Shattering Time Blurb:

The number one best-selling thriller Stealing Time continues its “breathtakingly original” journey.
Ronnie Andrews returns from eighteenth-century London shell-shocked from her first terrifying time travel encounter. Her boyfriend, Jeffrey Brennan, casts doubt on her sanity leaving Ronnie wondering if she went back in time or is having a mental breakdown.
Adding to the tension, Hurricane Francis, a storm the size of Texas, is barreling towards Florida and her fears of a repeat time travel experience mount. Ronnie’s best friend Steph, along with her friend Nick and Steph’s younger brother Ian, shield Ronnie from the dangers of Francis but they cannot save her from traveling back in time. Unfortunately, their meddling brings Ronnie to the brink of destruction as they are caught in the throes of the hurricane’s wrath.
Once again, Ronnie is transported to dangerous places and plagued with desperate situations, while experiencing perilous cultures including one of America’s first mysteries -- the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island.

A stunning conclusion brings Ronnie face to face with a dangerous ally who may hold the key to her past while offering salvation for her future.

Shattering Time, Chapter 13Ronnie woke calm and satiated. She stretched her legs and rolled onto her back. She usually slept in a T-shirt so the caress of the sheets felt particularly sensual against her naked flesh. The sun peeked in around the window shade and she wondered what the day would bring. Then it hit her. The day would bring Hurricane Francis to her doorstep! There was no way she could be here for that. She should have left yesterday.“Crap!” She sprang out of bed looking around for Jeffrey. He was already up—nice of him to let her sleep when he knew she was trying to leave. The clock showed 8:31 a.m. You should have left by now. It blinked to 8:32, too late. Her skin crawled with goose-flesh, longing for the warmth between the sheets, but there was no time for luxuriating under the covers. In the throes of passion last night, she had forgotten to finish packing and did not even set the alarm. She clicked the TV on, gathered her clothes and headed toward the shower, pausing to lean on the door jamb when the weatherman came on. The weatherman, Terry James was tamping down his all-out roaring excitement for the good of the community. “In sheer size, Francis is nearly twice as big as Charley with wind speeds peaking at 140 miles an hour.”Ronnie held her temples. “No!” This was not happening again. And for God’s sake she wasn’t going to be here for it. She shut the door and turned on the shower. Flashes of last night assaulted her as the hot water hit her body. A dizzying passion washed down the drain as she fought the urge take her time under the steamy spray. Panic won out and she finished soaping up and rinsed, longing for more but this was not the time or the place. Ronnie quickly dressed and finished packing. She combed her long hair and put it in a high ponytail, not wanting to take the time to mess with it. Once all her things were ready to go and she clicked the TV off, picked up her duffel bag and made her way to the kitchen, wondering if Jeffery had gone out for an errand or was lounging with coffee nearby. The door to the garage was ajar. She pushed it opened and found the attic ladder down. “Babe?” She called.“Oh, hey you’re awake.” His voice muffled up in the attic. “I’ll be right down.” “I thought you finished last night with that?” She craned her neck to look up the stairs. The ladder creaked and she saw his sneakered foot on the paint-stained wood of the step. His tanned muscular leg was within reach as he climbed down the ladder. “I thought so too, but after I saw the weather report I wanted to double check it. The storm is going to last for days, Ronnie. It will be so much worse than Charley, I’m afraid.”Her guts did a back flip. “I’m ready to leave. You want to come with me?”“Leave? Ronnie, the traffic is totally backed up on I-95. I don’t think you’re going anywhere.”All the blood left her face and her hands tingled. “What do you mean?”“Seriously, they’ve evacuated millions of people along the coast and low lying areas inland. They’re all on 95 right now.”“But I’m not going to be here, Jeffrey. Damn it, I should have left last night like I wanted to.”He raised his eyebrows. “You don’t regret last night, do you?” He reached out for her arm, but she stepped backwards. “Look, I am NOT going to be here when Francis hits.” She pointed towards the garage door. “I’m taking my chances out there.” “Ron, it’s the largest evacuation in history. How do you think you’re going to get on I-95 and make it to Virginia before the storm hits?” His frustration was evident in his voice. “It’s just not feasible.”“Jeffrey if I leave now I’ll get ahead of the crowd and it won’t be too bad.” Her mind raced with every reason she should not be here. “Really? It is already too late Ronnie.” He turned her around and shoved her toward the kitchen door back into the house. “Just wait, they show I-4 and 95 all the way to North Carolina is clogged with evacuees. You’d never make it home in time and hotels will be booked. What will you do in your car on the road when the hurricane hits?” His voice took an angry tone now. They went to the TV and she clicked it on. Sure enough Terry James was showing Skycam views of the road. Traffic was crawling. “Now what do I do?” Her cheeks flushed. She should have left last night, but with Jeffrey so thoroughly distracting her she never made it out of the door. There was supposed to be time today.. “Babe, I’ll stay with you.” He said wrapping his arms around her.Ronnie broke free feeling claustrophobic. “No, no, no. I have to get out of here!” “A hurricane the size of Texas?” Ronnie shook her head. Would she end up back in eighteenth-century London again, or somewhere worse? It had been so horrific last time. The phone rang and Ronnie glared at it as if it was an alien invading. Who the hell could that be? “Hello.”“Hey, love, I just wanted to see if you were on the road yet. You didn’t answer your cell.” Steph’s cheerful Scots greeted her. “Oh God, Steph, I wish. I’m staying here.” Ronnie eyed Jeffrey, who took her waist and pulled her towards him. Ronnie stiff armed him and walked into the kitchen. “Have you seen the news? Traffic is a nightmare, I’ll never get to Virginia.”
“What will you do now?” She could her her brother Ian in the background trying to grab the phone from her. “Ian, stop.”“Jeffrey’s here.” Ronnie said. “No, seriously? Ronnie, you have to be smarter than that. You can’t be with him during this storm. You just cannae.” Steph’s Scottish brogue was thicker. Was it Ian’s influence?Ronnie heard more shuffling and then Ian’s voice. “Hi Ronnie. How are you? What color knickers you wearing?”More shuffling and Steph got the phone back. “Ya wee eegit, stop playing around this is serious. Sorry love, he’s acting as if he’s twelve. What if we came to stay with you? I swear he won’t go through your underwear drawers.” She could hear Ian in the background begging, “Please, please, oh please.”Ronnie couldn’t help but smile, he was a hound dog for sure but he did make her laugh. “Are you sure?” Ian was back on the line, “If you’re short on beds I’ll be happy to share yours, Ronnie.” She laughed. “That won’t be necessary Jeffrey will be in my bed.” Steph was back on the line, “Not if I have anything to say about it. Ronnie, you have to tell him to shove off.”Ronnie’s cheeks felt hot. It was the usual battle between Jeffrey and Steph. Either way she would make someone mad. “I don’t think I have enough food thought, they’re saying the storm should last over the entire weekend.”“Hey, run to the store and just grab what you can. I’ll bring what I have and call Nick. Your tank is full, right?” Steph said. “Yeah, it is.” Ronnie opened the cupboards, making note of what she had. Not much. Steph continued. “Good, better go now, the shelves are emptying as we speak.”
“Okay, come over soon okay?” Ronnie hung up the phone, grabbed her car keys. “Jeff. I’ll be back. I’m going to the store. Anything you need?”“Yeah, buy some of those Starbucks ready-made drinks, we’re gonna need some coffee.”“Okay.” She knew she should tell him Steph was coming over but he would be pissed. Would Steph and Jeffrey kill each other? It would be uncomfortable, but maybe, just maybe, they’d learn to get along.Ronnie dashed through the store grabbing what was left of the essentials and fought the frantic masses to get to the register. The storm was supposed to last several days and it was daunting to think about so many meals they’d have to prepare with five people there over the duration and no power. Would it be enough? There would be no turning back, the roads would be impassable after the storm and stores would be closed. After Hurricane Isabel, it had been weeks before the power returned in some of the Virginia Beach neighborhoods. Ronnie jumped back in her car and fought traffic back to the house. As she pulled into the driveway she eyed the huge trees in her new yard, the potential for horrible damage was looming directly over her roof. In the side yard a giant lob lolly pine tree five times the height of her house waved a branch in the breeze as if to say, hello, I’m here to make your day. In the front yard, a few hickories and smaller live oaks shimmied in the light breeze. Behind the house was the Camphor, a grapefruit and orange tree, but the neighbor’s all had large trees that could easily flatten her single-story ranch. Jeffrey was right the trees had made it through Charlie with no issues, but it was possible that one had been damaged during that storm. Francis was going to be a lot worse. She grabbed the groceries and made her way through the open garage door through to the kitchen, setting them down on the counter.

Shattering (ISLAND) Time Blog Tour -- British Virgin ISLANDS

Shattering (Island) Time -- The British Virgins Islands
Welcome to my book promotion tour where we are on island time and everything is breezy and bright. Join me here at Smuggler’s Cove beach in the British Virgin Islands, one of the quieter spots on the island.

Imagine it with me -- Light breeze, salty air, seagulls flying overhead. The sun is warm on your shoulders and the sand squishes between your toes.
Why are we here on this lovely beach and what does it has to do with my latest release, Shattering Time?

Please, grab a cold drink and I shall share a little island tale with you. I have some traditional snacks here for you too. Pate (Pronounced PAH-TEH), fried dough filled with meator if you prefer a Johnnycake, a bit like our fried dough at the carnival. This drink complements of Suzanne Kelman and her amazing blog
On August 24, 2004, a storm was born. It started like most tropical depressions with a gathering of energy but in time it grew to a category 4 hurricane the size of Texas. This monster storm crawled its way through the Caribbean and struck the east coast of Florida. On it’s path took 50 lives and caused nearly $10 billion in damages.

The storm, Hurricane Francis, is an important driving force in Shattering Time. Francis provides fuel for the time travel device and is the perfect tension building, road blocking, force of nature to screw everything up for Ronnie, Steph, Jeffrey, and Nick (the characters from my first book, Stealing Time).
Shattering Time is a wild ride full of suspense and edge of your seat tension. It is the second book in the Stealing Time series and my best work yet.

Shattering Time:

The number one best-selling thriller Stealing Time continues it’s “breathtakingly original” journey.
