The author of five young-adult novels published in the U.S. and Germany, Linda Piazza currently prepares to submit Sycamore Dawn, a literary novel-in-progress intended for adults. She grew up in the Deep South and has tried all her life to resolve how people who were kind to her can then behave with suspicion and hatred toward others. Sycamore Dawn was prompted by her discovery that her grandfather joined in an act of racial hatred that her then 11-year-old father witnessed.

The book reviews she posts all feature four or five stars because she gives herself permission to stop reading the books she doesn't like.

Gloria Rodgers travels to her hometown to provide respite for her father, who is care-taking Gloria's grandmother. Gloria plans the trip as a writing sabbatical, but she arrives with her teen-aged stepdaughter in tow to witness to witness an outrageous argument between her father and her grandmother's once-a-week companion. To Gloria's astonishment, her father seems determined to prove correct the racism that Gloria's stepdaughter had believed true of Gloria's hometown. Over the course of two weeks in August in 1999, Gloria makes discoveries that upend everything she thought she knew about her family and also threaten her faith in the premise that has always driven her writing life.

This story is based on a true event in my own family's history. One of the discoveries Gloria makes was one I made about my own father's history. However, the characters in this novel are not based on my family members, but instead are people who became more and more real to me as I wrote this novel.

Everyone needs an editor, especially for a book project that's taken years to complete. I'm lucky to have an accomplished writer/editor among my best friends. She's got the manuscript now, reviewing it before I make another round of edits and then begin submitting. (less)
