They spar well, and she's pretty good about not just succumbing to his charms. She's also good about getting out of Dodge when she realizes he's still married. Her relationship with St. John Rivers is practically a commercial transaction, while she has passion with Rochester.

And as for him, he is almost self-deprecating, a bit scared of how she's going to react to him and what he says and how he truly is. I believe he's really touched and moved by her returning to him even after he's physically damaged. At that point, he seems to feel she cares for him as himself, and not as being made of money.(less)
