Truth may be stranger than fiction, but it's also far harder to track down. Jaine Fenn has had numerous short stories professionally published, some of which appear in the collection 'Downside Girls' and has won the British Science Fiction Association Short Fiction award. Her Hidden Empire space opera sequence, published by Gollancz, starts with the novel 'Principles of Angels'. Her Shadowlands science fantasy duology is published by Angry Robot. ...more

As they have no immediate plans to do so they have allowed me to use the audio rights, so I have been recording them myself using my husband's music studio, and putting them on my Patreon, which can be found here: https://www.patreon.com/jainefenn
I should say that it this a fairly slow process, so we're only halfway through Principles of Angels at the moment, but on the plus side there are other short stories set in the same universe on my Patreon too.(less)

A free fiction snippet

My publishers, Angry Robot, asked me to record a couple of spoken pieces about the Shadowlands books. One was an introduction to the world and story, and the other was me reading the opening chapter of the second book, Broken Shadow, which you can now listen to here (as well as getting a sneak peak at my library).

This book's title is perhaps too accurate: the plot is a sequence of crazy (and/or occasionally jarringly nasty) events and humorous interludes thrown breathlessly at the reader without much sense of overall structure or logical development.

I read this after seeing the film, and though I enjoyed the book in itself - there's some delicious writing - I found the film more satisfying. The structure, of (tenuously) linked stories going forward, then backwards, in time, is very attractive, b ...more
