Peter Pound’s concept design for Dark City

I recently rewatched this film for the first time since 1997. Didn’t rate it at all at the time, mainly because of the god awful info dump at the start. The director’s cut has completely turned me around. It’s still a film that outreaches its ambitions, but there are moments of Gilliam-esque brilliance, a wonderful pulpy aesthetic, and the sense of something deeper and scarier shifting beneath the surface.

“I think, ironically, the most powerful protest songs are the ones written out of a place of selfishness, because it’s a need for the writer to be able to process these strong emotions in themselves. When it’s coming from an emotional reaction in the artist, I don’t think you can argue with it.”

THE DRESSMAKER is out on DVD this week. To celebrate, here’s a brand new video in which I chat to star Hugo Weaving. One question goes answered: Who has the wildest hair of all?
