'Think of novels as houses'
“Ithink of novels as houses. You live in them over the course of a long period, both as a reader and as a writer.” – Nicole Krauss
Born in New York City on Aug. 18,1974 Krauss is perhaps best known for her novels Man Walks Into a Room, TheHistory of Love, and Forest Dark, although her short fiction hasalso been widely published in everything from The New Yorker to BestAmerican Short Stories. Her 2020collection of short stories, To Be A Man, won the prestigious WingateLiterary Prize in 2022.
A writer since childhood, she saidshe always wrote little things when she was younger. “My first opus was a book of poems put downin a spiral notebook at five or six, handsomely accompanied by crayonillustrations. “
Krauss “officially” started writing– mostly poetry – in her teens and had her first novel published in 2001. Her award-winning novels, two of which have beenadapted into films, have been translated into 35 languages.

'Paradise? Kind of a library'
“Ihave always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”– Jorge Luis Borges
Born in Argentina in August of 1899,Borges has been called one of the 20th Century’s most importantwriters and perhaps the most important figure in Spanish-language literaturesince Cervantes. He wrote his first poems as a boy, published his first book ofpoems at age 23, and continued writing poetry right up to his death in 1986.
For Saturday's Poem, here is Borges’
The Forging
Like the blind man whose hands areprecursors
that push aside walls and glimpse heavens
slowly, flustered, I feel
in the crack of night
the verses that are to come.
I must burn the abominable darkness
in their limpid bonfire:
the purple of words
on the flagellated shoulder of time.
I must enclose the tears of evening
in the hard diamond of the poem.
No matter if the soul
walks naked and lonely as the wind
if the universe of a glorious kiss
still embraces my life.
The night is good fertile ground
for a sower of verses.

'What can't be said can be written'
“Literaturespeaks with everyone individually - it is personal property that stays insideour heads. And nothing speaks to us as forcefully as a book, which expectsnothing in return other than that we think and feel.”– Herta Müller
A Romanian-born German novelist, poet, essayist and recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Literature, Müller wasborn on August 17, 1953. Since theearly 1990s she has been internationally established, and her works have beentranslated into more than 20 languages.
Many of Müller's literary works address an individual's vulnerability underoppression and persecution, rooted in her experiences as one of Romania'sGerman-speaking ethnic minorities under the brutal dictator Ceaușescu. Perhaps best-known among her many novels are The Passport and The Hunger Angel, along with several best-selling books of poetryand an award-winning book of essays, Hungerand Silk.
“I write in order to bear witness to life,” she said. “What can't be said can be written. Becausewriting is a silent act, a labor from the head to the hand.”

A Writer's Moment: 'Know, love and believe in what you're doing'
'Know, love and believe in what you're doing'
“Ifyou want to be successful, it's just this simple. Know what you are doing. Lovewhat you are doing. And believe in what you are doing.”– Will Rogers
Eighty-nine years ago today Rogers, one of America's great humorists and homespun philosophers, died in a planecrash with aviator Wiley Post as they were flying in Alaska. At the time,he was perhaps as well known – if not more well known – than any figure in theworld.
Born in Oklahoma Territory in 1879, Rogers was noted for his saying, "I never met a man I didn't like." As a columnist and speaker hisalmost daily sayings about everything from culture to politics were known around the globe, many shared in his more than 4,000 newspaper essays. He also did hundreds of talks ona weekly syndicated radio show and appeared in more than 50 movies.
I put 15-year-old Will Rogers intomy historical novel And The WindWhispered based on a real life adventure he became embroiled in during atrip to the Southern Black Hills with two Oklahoma ranching friends. Following the publication of that novel, Iwas invited to visit the Rogers boyhood home and tour the Will Rogers Museum inClaremore, OK. Both were wonderfulexperiences and a great opportunity to learn even more of Rogers’ life and writings.

A Writer's Moment: 'I just happen to be an author'
'I just happen to be an author'
“My jobis essentially that of an entertainer, no different to that of a musician, nodifferent to that of an actor. I just happen to be an author.” – BryceCourtenay
Despite Courtenay's fearsthat The Power ofOne would be a dud it became a worldwide best-seller, has had a successful children's edition, and was made into a popular feature film.
The author of 23 books, mostly novels, Courtenay - who died in 2012 -was one of Australia's most commercially successful authors. A careeradvertising director, he helped build his own success over the long term bypromoting himself and developing a relationship with readers whilemarketing his books. Each year he would give away up to 2,500 books to people he randomly met in the street.

Many of his works are written from first personnarrative, allowing the reader to put himself or herself into the lead role asif the story were their own.
“Ilike to share my thoughts and perspectives,” he said. “And remember, the only thing that's authentic aboutwhat a writer writes is his work. Everything else belongs to us all.”
