One Nation Under Song: My Karaoke Journey through Grief, Joy, and America is now available! I'm both excited and nervous to share my story of singing karaoke in all 50 states. This book reflects so much of who I am.

It had always been a life goal to sing karaoke in all 50 states as singing is what brings me the most joy, Then, during the summer of 2016, I took three months (99 days to be exact) to travel the US and sing karaoke in all lower 48 states in order to reflect on the death of my best friend. Later, I completed my karaoke experience by singing in Alaska and Hawaii.

Please ask me any questions about my trip, this writing process, or karaoke. Thanks for your support!

I enjoy being challenged by my day-to-day life, and if something lingers in my brain for a while, it won't go away until I write about it!

I am also motivated to write when a particular cause makes the news and is misrepresented. As a researcher, it bothers me when media outlets over simplify findings to create a sensational, but inaccurate, story about the lives and experiences of youth and young adults. I long for accuracy in reporting so that we create a much less fearful, but more accurate, depiction of this generation.(less)

The blog is also about my personal transformation as I come to terms with being middle-aged -- making peace with the person I am, but knowing there is room for growth.

I continue to think about writing another sexuality education book for youth/young adults that focuses more on relationships and technology. It's a tough sell, because schools are so tied to National and/or State Standards in health education, and frankly our country does a horrible job of prioritizing the right things we should educate our children on when it comes to helping develop a healthy sexuality.

But no harm in thinking, right?(less)

Five feminists sat down for lunch, each with differing levels of proficiency in English ranging from native (me) to barely able to follow along, and differing levels of proficiency Korean ranging from native (three women) to non-existent (me). Talk shifted quickly but smoothly from “How was your flight?” to ““What do you mean the United … Continue reading Sated Read more of this blog post »

“Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people. It will keep you cramped and insane your whole life, and it is the main obstacle between you and a shitty first draft. I think perfectionism is based on the obsessive belief that if you run carefully enough, hitting each stepping-stone just right, you won't have to die. The truth is that you will die anyway and that a lot of people who aren't even looking at their feet are going to do a whole lot better than you, and have a lot more fun while they're doing it.”
Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life

“At the end of the day, tell yourself gently: "I love you, you did the best you could today, and even if you didn't accomplished all you had planned, I love you anyway.”
