Racheline Maltese is a queer writer living a big life from a small space. She flies planes, sails boats, and rides horses, but as a native New Yorker, has no idea how to drive a car.

A performer and storyteller focused on themes of celebrity, gender, desire and mourning, Racheline has a journalism degree from The George Washington University; studied acting and directing at the Atlantic Theater Company Acting School (New York City) and the National Institute of Dramatic Art (Sydney, Australia); and is a proud SAG-AFTRA member.

She lives in Brooklyn with her partner and their two cats.

I am so excited you are interested in this! Thank you for asking.

This novel is not out yet, but it is in the submission process and we hope to have information about it soon. However, soon in publishing terms may mean several months. Its title in submission is A Queen from the North, but titles sometimes/often change during the acceptance and publication process.

But, since I love this book, and I love this character...

Below I've quoted the beginning of the five-page summary for the book. Georgina (who goes by George) is the character in question, and only has a supporting role in this novel (which centers on a cisgendered M/F romance). However, one of the things my cowriter and I are seeking in a contract for this book is the opportunity to write books about some of the other characters in the world. George is one of our two top priorities (the other is Paige, our heroine's best friend).

"Despite its name, the modern United Kingdom is a divided country: the wounds of the War of the Roses have never fully healed. The ancient rift between the Houses of York and Lancaster mirror the cultural and economic divide between the North and the South, pitting poverty-stricken York against wealthy royalist London.

The fractured Kingdom is also in mourning.

Just outside of London, as the nation observes the tenth anniversary of the death of the Princess of Wales, her widower and the heir to the throne, Arthur, is confronted by his young niece Princess Georgina. Arthur, who is almost 40, must remarry and produce an heir, otherwise she herself will be directly in line for the throne, a responsibility she does not want. Because while Georgina seems to be a typical British teenager, she’s also been having dreams about the death of the ravens at the Tower of London, an omen that would signal the end of the monarchy."

George is precocious, spooky, seemingly ice cold, and seriously dedicated to conservationist charities (she has her 18th birthday party alone at a bird sanctuary so she can look at the birds). She is also burdened with being the spitting image of her many-times great grandmother Anne Boleyn. The novel's heroine refers to her as "a fox-faced witch girl."

George also identifies as a (genderqueer) woman, but if ruling should be thrust upon her, desires to be a king. The word genderqueer is not used in this first book, but will be used in her book, which will focus on her relationships and the military career she pursues as any male scion of the royal house would be expected to.(less)
