Alan Paul is a senior writer for Guitar World magazine and has interviewed the members of the Allman Brothers Band hundreds of times. No one has written more frequently about the band.

He is the author of Big in China: My Unlikely Adventures Raising a Family, Playing the Blues, and Becoming a Star in Beijing (Harper), which is currently being developed as a film by Ivan Reitman's Montecito Pictures.

Big in China is a memoir about raising three American children in Beijing and the unlikely success of his Chinese blues band, Woodie Alan. He lives with his family in Maplewood, New Jersey.

Texas Flood by Alan Paul
"This book was interesting to me because I was around to watch Stevie Ray's early career. I knew that he came from a hard place, and I watched him play in the Abraxas Club in Waco when we were both youngsters. I moved to Austin in 1975, and lived down" Read more of this review »
Big in China by Alan Paul
"I was familiar with Alan Paul because of his writing about the Allman Brothers Band and other musicians in the Allman extended family. This book is about the three and one half years he and his family spent in China while his wife Rebecca was posted " Read more of this review »
Big in China by Alan Paul
"Gets especially high rating as the author tried hard to get to know China and the Chinese, rather than just leading a completely cosseted expat life. I confess I wasn't all that interested on the musician aspect of the story, but I knew that going in" Read more of this review »

I really disliked almost every page in this book. Begins in misery and disaffection and ends in the same place. Read for book club or I never would have finished. It's really amazing to me that so many people seem to like it so much.

“I’ll give it a year. I’ll go out and play these clubs and then I’ll go on to college.’ But after a year, I was so far in debt from trying to buy amps and guitars and everything else, that I had to do another year.”
Alan Paul, One Way Out: The Inside History of the Allman Brothers Band

“Late in 1967, still struggling to write a keeper song, Allman found himself sitting in a room in Pensacola’s Evergreen Motel, holding Duane’s guitar, which was tuned to open E. “I picked up the guitar and didn’t know it was natural-tuned,” Allman recalls. “I just started strumming it and hit these beautiful chords. It was just open strings, then an E shape first fret, then moved to the second fret. This is a great example of the way different tunings can open up different roads to you as a songwriter.”
