Alan Paul is a senior writer for Guitar World magazine and has interviewed the members of the Allman Brothers Band hundreds of times. No one has written more frequently about the band.

He is the author of Big in China: My Unlikely Adventures Raising a Family, Playing the Blues, and Becoming a Star in Beijing (Harper), which is currently being developed as a film by Ivan Reitman's Montecito Pictures.

Big in China is a memoir about raising three American children in Beijing and the unlikely success of his Chinese blues band, Woodie Alan. He lives with his family in Maplewood, New Jersey.

A year ago today, May 1, 2017, Col. Bruce Hampton died n in the most dramatic possible fashion during his 70th birthday party concert at the fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta.  I wrote the following story for the Wall Street Journal and was pleasantly surprised to watch it be one of the most read and most shared stories on the WSJ site for days. I knew Bruce would have like...

Big in China by Alan Paul
"I was familiar with Alan Paul because of his writing about the Allman Brothers Band and other musicians in the Allman extended family. This book is about the three and one half years he and his family spent in China while his wife Rebecca was post..." Read more of this review »

"Gets especially high rating as the author tried hard to get to know China and the Chinese, rather than just leading a completely cosseted expat life. I confess I wasn't all that interested on the musician aspect of the story, but I knew that going..." Read more of this review »

Shelter by Jung Yun
"There are depressing books, and then there are books that make you feel like you need to bury yourself in a pile of puppies until you feel good about the world again. This book was such a downer, and it wasn't even the meaningful kind of depressin..." Read more of this review »

I really disliked almost every page in this book. Begins in misery and disaffection and ends in the same place. Read for book club or I never would have finished. It's really amazing to me that so many people seem to like it so much.

“I’ll give it a year. I’ll go out and play these clubs and then I’ll go on to college.’ But after a year, I was so far in debt from trying to buy amps and guitars and everything else, that I had to do another year.”
Alan Paul, One Way Out: The Inside History of the Allman Brothers Band

“Together we gazed out over corkscrew switchbacks cut through a barren, rocky landscape stretching to the horizon. It was simultaneously awesome and insane to be in this spot as a family, though, for a flicker of an instant, the lone explorer in me longed to be out there alone with just a 4x4.”
Alan Paul, Unsavory Elements: Stories of Foreigners on the Loose in China

“Late in 1967, still struggling to write a keeper song, Allman found himself sitting in a room in Pensacola’s Evergreen Motel, holding Duane’s guitar, which was tuned to open E. “I picked up the guitar and didn’t know it was natural-tuned,” Allman recalls. “I just started strumming it and hit these beautiful chords. It was just open strings, then an E shape first fret, then moved to the second fret. This is a great example of the way different tunings can open up different roads to you as a songwriter.”
