D.L. Havlin The "Bully Route Home" was just released by my publisher on August 15th. It's partly autobiographical, partly imagination, and mostly a statement on what I see occurring in this country today ... a decline in the progress we've made in race relations since the fifties. I hope it will help people (particularly younger ones) see where we've already tread and realize retracing our steps is a foolish endeavor.
D.L. Havlin I always had an interest. (My high school advisor recommended that as my college major) I pursued a business career. What rekindled my desire were requests by my wife and friends to write about some my experiences when I traveled to over 100 counties. I fell in love and haven't stopped.
D.L. Havlin My current project is a series of novels that traces the history of Florida's "modern era," starting with the influx of Tory (loyalists) forced to flee the fledgling US extending through World War II. It will be called the "The Wild, WIld, East." Each of the three books will bear a subtitle ... for example ... "The Wild, Wild, East :Land without mercy." Much of Florida's history during this period isn't well known. Levels of violence, lawlessness, greed and corruption that occured in the Sunshine State make what happened in the West ressemble a Quaker picnic.
D.L. Havlin DON"T RUSH THE PROCESS!! First, just don't sit down and hope something will happen. Find a topic, idea, or cause that you wish to champion ... one you can address with passion ... then WRITE! Remember the authoring process has just begun when you finish the first draft of your book. Wash, polish, wax then strip and begin again. When you think its perfect, repeat the process. The reason there is more manure in the literary pipeline than a Washington DC sewer is the failure to strive for quality.
D.L. Havlin I love meeting the fascinating people who share my interesting in writing and reading, the knowledge I gain with the research I do in connection with my novels, hopefully sharing information that may help help someone from duplicating my errors, logically influencing others thoughts, and most of all, entertaining my readers.
D.L. Havlin Dealing with writers block isn't a problem I've had to face in 20+ years of writing. I believe the reason I haven't faced this obstacle is life lesssons learned and the manner in which I pursue my craft. First - Because I started writing at an advanced age and have been fortunate to have an extensive life resume my primary problem is having time to write about all the things I'd like not the reverse. Second - I believe readers are thinkers. With this in mind, the research I do to satisfy my readers creates many paths do execute my basic themes. Third - I'm an outliner and planner. I know precisely what I want to accomplish and how I'll do it before I start writing. That doesn't preclude me from drastically changing my plans when a creative possibility comes along.
