1.Write honestly. Be vulnerable.
2. A writer can only venture as deep as he's willing to go. Your personal perspective (world-view) will make it's way onto the page, so don't write with a 'message' or 'theme' in mind. Instead, write what you love.
3. What makes you afraid. What makes you hope.
4. Don't try to force a theme or message. That will evolve without you even trying if you focus on the story. The worst thing I've seen in new (fiction) writing is the author using their craft as a soap box for their message. Nothing turns me off more. IMO

I take a break for a few hours or a few days, go back and read what I've written and find out where it begins to 'drag,' and fix it.

As crazy as it sounds, I sure do! A lot of the characters have particular aspects of my personality woven in: (Shai: stubborn, feisty, Aliah: protective, introspective, loves deeply)
I do a complete character analysis before I begin writing, which means I know everything about each one even if it's never mentioned in the novel. I know their favorite colors, foods, and hobbies.
As for the plot, I drew on the passion of Christ (that He laid down His life because of love even in spite how He was treated and misunderstood) and on the fall/reconciliation of the first man Adam.
Thanks for asking!

As a reader, the reflection of the passion of Christ, laying his life down and reconciliation really came through. You wrote that so well. In all honestly, months after reading your book it has stayed with me, a sure sign of a good book! And I have the pleasure of rereading it.
