For me, writing is a lot like exercising (I guess it is a heavy duty workout for the brain). I have to push myself to get started, but once I'm in the flow it is exhilarating.

At a weekend novel writing workshop. Every participant had to pluck an object from a box and formulate a 'what if' question based on their object. My object was a guitar tuner. I didn't know that so I started off with 'What if the object was an alien tool.' The idea grew from there.

Three things. Read lots, write lots and write for yourself. I think if you write something you want to write your voice will be more genuine and you are more likely to complete the project.

The best way I'm aware of is to keep writing, although sometimes it helps to talk your plot through with a trusted friend.

There are so many things. I don't want to romanticise the life of an author, because it is hard and lonely work at times, The high points are: getting to choose what you want to write, the sense of satisfaction you feel when the words come together on the page exactly the way you wanted them to, the achievement of writing a book, and the thrill of seeing your story published!

I wanted to write another adventure for Michael and Elvis, the hapless heroes in my first book, 'How I Alienated my Grandma' so that is what I am doing. It's been a bit slow thanks to some family issues, but watch this space.
