She woke up before dawn and stumbled to the kitchen to prepare her morning coffee. She peered into the coffee tin to find that it was empty.

I'd probably just hang out for a few days in Forrestville, Tennesee with Dil, Travis, and Lydia (from The Serpent King). I love them so.

THE RADIUS OF US began on a Saturday in May, 2013. I walked into an immigration detention center’s visitation room for probably the hundredth time, but still my heart broke wide open. I spoke on a phone, through the glass, with a teenage asylum-seeker from El Salvador, and I knew that I would have to write this story.

I'm fascinated by the ways that we humans interact! I've always payed close attention to people in random places - at the grocery store, in a coffee shop, in line at the post office, in the airport (airports are incredible for people-watching!). Now, I sort-of have a reason to do all of this, since I need these subtle details if I want to make the relationships in my stories feel real. In other words: being a writer is a great excuse for strange, mildly socially unacceptable behavior.

Usually, what "blocks" my writing is my very full life! When I'm really desperate to carve out time for writing, I wake up very early in the morning (I mean VERY early) and write for a couple of hours before the rest of the house gets up. It's not often that I sit in front of the computer, unable to put words on the page - I usually write too many words. But if I do find myself staring at a blank screen, I take my dog for a walk or listen to amazing music. Each of my stories has a playlist that brings me into the characters and their emotions. When I'm stuck, I listen to the right song on repeat.
