Perhaps not a mystery so much as a tragedy, but I recently learned that a direct ancestor murdered his granddaughter after spending time in Bethlem, more commonly known as Bedlam. It would be a draining book to write, so I don't think I'd want to be the one to do it—although I might manage an essay or short creative non-fiction piece in the future.
