As a nurse, I came across so many people who didn't know what their prescription drugs were and sometimes they weren't even really sure what they were for. This is so dangerous. So, I decided that we needed an easy-to-read and easy-to-undertand guide on how to read a prescription and how to safely take or give medicines.

The standard response is to read as much as you can - and I do agree with that. But my response is usually to just start writing. Find something you want to write about, learn about it and start writing. Then craft it, fix it, perfect it.

Being a writer gives you license to speak to people who you may never normally encounter. You can ask questions and learn things, and have fun while doing it. Writing allows you to be nosy - because you have to be.
