The "big book" on my summer reading list is Naomi Klein's soon-to-be-released "No Is Not Enough." I've also started Moby's honest and brilliantly written memoir "Porcelain," which I will likely finish sometime in June. I'm always on the lookout for big books that deal with the big contemporary challenges faced by American or global society.

Writing is a little like playing god. You create characters, make them act any way you want, and orchestrate events in your plot according to your whim. Having such power is quite exhilarating, but even better – for me – is the opportunity to voice my ideas through underlying themes. My ultimate hope in doing this is to influence readers, to make them care. This is also writing's greatest risk and challenge.

My love of literature and my desire to write fiction go all the way back to high school. For sophomore English I had a great teacher who challenged, inspired, and encouraged all of us to explore literature and to express ourselves through writing. In my professional career in information technology, I seized opportunities to write, but this was mostly dry, unimaginative technical writing. I feared I might have lost any talent to write creatively but, once I reached my 60s, I decided to take a whack at it. That was one of the most rewarding decisions I ever made.

I’m a passionate environmentalist. Call me a tree-hugger if you like. For years I’ve been deeply concerned about climate change and the unwillingness of those in our federal government to deal with it – as well as their unwillingness to deal with a host of other pressing national problems that don’t necessarily poll well in their reelection campaigns.
I wanted to build a novel around these major themes while, at the same time, taking pains to craft a compelling plot with an array of memorable characters. If there is anything consistent in all of my fiction, it is my commitment to character and plot while tackling contemporary themes of major importance. The result of all this is Third Wind.
