Rob Turnbull I'm not a fan of couples in fiction, not really. Most authors (myself included) struggle to show a realistic relationship. Who doesn't get annoyed at a newly formed couple exchanging awkward banter or endearments mere hours after meeting? Sacrificing themselves for this person they just met?
Keep in mind, this answer is from the perspective of a author and reader of post-apocalyptic fiction. When I have a couple in my books, it's to advance the story, not to complete/prop up a weakly-written character.
Rob Turnbull I don't write if I don't feel like writing.
Rob Turnbull I like being in charge and manipulating my characters. Making things tough or easy for them, hurting or rewarding them, and making them likeable or hateable. I can do whatever I like, something real life restricts.
Rob Turnbull I know other writers and they seem to have rules, like writing for fifteen minutes a day. My only advice is to write what you want when you want.
Rob Turnbull I am working on two books right now. One is the sequel to "Thinning the Herd," titled "All Your States Are Belong to Us." The other book is titled "Amok," and deals with brutal people loosed upon unsuspecting everyday people.
Rob Turnbull I enjoy being in total control of my characters and their situations. Sometimes I put them in seemingly impossible situations and try and get them out. If I can't, they die.
Rob Turnbull I think everyone ponders "what if" scenarios. Usually it's things like "What would I do if I won the lottery? or other benign stuff. I have always wondered how I would cope if I had only myself and my wits to survive and the world was my oyster. "Thinning the Herd" is a fictional account of that.
