Freddy Cruz I just finished a book about a radio personality who was ditched by his girlfriend for a world famous musician. On-stage at a concert, in front of tens of thousands of rabid fans. And his quest for revenge.
Freddy Cruz I can tell you a story in one sentence, as told by a listener who called in to my show. "Once upon a time, someone died." Scary, I know.
Freddy Cruz Writing is such a solitary activity. Leverage that fact into knowing that you are the only one who will see what appears on the screen/sheet of paper. Just you. But sometimes, the person responsible for blocking progress is the person in the mirror. That's right, YOU. So tell yourself to get out of your way and allow yourself to write indiscriminately. No regard for anything but the ideas that you have allowed to brew in your head.
Freddy Cruz A love for current affairs and history. "The Gulag Archipelago" and "On Tyranny" inspired my story.
Freddy Cruz Do the work. Even when you don't want to. Never, EVER, wait for the muse. Park your butt in that seat and write. Seth Godin once said, and I'm paraphrasing, "write enough bad words (not profanity) and the good ones will appear." If you don't have time, make it. If you don't make it, then you transforming that idea into a story isn't as important as you think it is. And that's okay. But if it IS important, then you must treat it as a job. And as with any job, you have to show up. Even when you don't feel like it.
