Fenton R. Kay I don't know about mysteries in my life. All of my mystery novels are built around places and things that I have done and seen during my career as a professional field biologist. Working with critters and in remote places doing biological fieldwork provides lots of adventures and I try to bring those out in my stories.
Fenton R. Kay My wife renovates and remodels historic adobe buildings in Las Cruces, NM. Many of the old buildings in the historic part of the town are thought to be haunted. The WPA-built 1930s courthouse is one of the buildings believed to be haunted (but not one my wife owns). I am on the verge of publishing a novella using that building as the setting for my engineer/witch and her telepathic cat to deal with the mystery of clanking and other strange noises coming from the old jail.
Fenton R. Kay The book I am currently getting ready to publish is a cozy mystery featuring a woman Ph.D. engineer that is also a witch. She has a telepathic cat as her familiar.
I have published two sequels to my mystery Le Cochon Volant. I have published a YA novel about a Mayan young man that gets captured by the Spanish in the 1500s. He was trained to play the jaguar drum in his Mayan temple. He learns to play the guitar and winds up in Spain. I have also published a middle reader coming-of-age story based on Native American tales and teachings.
Fenton R. Kay The best thing about being a writer is the freedom to sit down and put what I think into text, rather than putting something required and not necessarily interesting into text.
Fenton R. Kay I seldom get what I would call writer's block. I do sometimes go days between writing sessions, but it's usually because one or more of my other responsibilities capture my attention. I teach multiple courses online for two universities and those have a way of using a lot of time.
But, when I do feel stymied somewhere in a story, I often go back and edit or re-read what I've written. That usually jars the little gray cells back into writing mode. But, you know, sometimes my muse just decides to take a vacation.
Fenton R. Kay Summer's gone! I typically don't plan ahead on what I read. Sort of whatever strikes my fancy.
