I had no idea I was going to write a memoir. Being a therapist I always thought I'd write a self-help book. One Father's Day a few years back I was having a rough day thinking about my own dad and so I wrote an essay. It was raw and full of emotion. A few months later I realized I needed to write my story. When I sat down it was almost like the book wrote itself. It was gut-wrenching and one of the toughest things I've ever done.

When I go into my office to write I close the door and it's like being in my genie bottle. I'm transported into another world, almost like going to the movies. Since I write memoir I'm reliving the past and seeing it with fresh eyes, so it is like a movie in a sense. Think The Matrix meets Girl, Interrupted!

I'm currently working on the second book of my memoir trilogy called Lather. Rinse. Repeat. I'm so much wiser now that I have my first book under my belt so this is going much more smoothly. I'm loving it!

Two things. Number one, you MUST write. I meet many people who have wanted to write for years and never set aside the time. You have to just set aside time and protect that time fiercely.
Second, if you write a book you MUST have an editor. If you're going to publish you're editor needs to be a professional. My editor has made me a much better writer! The expense is worth it.

Being able to inspire others with my story. I tried to make my stories universal in theme. Yes, I told my story but really I'm telling everyone's story, in a sense. I felt like if I put it all out there others wouldn't feel ashamed to do the same.
Another thing I love about writing is being able to tap into my creative side. I love to create!

I usually don't get writer's block unless I'm tired. If I feel tired or jet lagged I have to take a nap before I'm ready to get back at it. Sleep is my writing secret!
