Gary Raymond Write through it. Essentially, I don't believe in "writer's block". Creating a novel is all about redrafting, and you can't do that if you have nothing to redraft. The first draft will be terrible, so just get words on the page. Turn up for work and write. Anything else is just not writing - you can call it what you want - but you have to turn up to work. Doctor's don't say they can't treat anyone today because they have medicine block.
Gary Raymond Creating stories. The satisfaction as a writer must come from the work itself, and not from anything else, because it's the writing that takes so much blood, sweat, tears, and time. If the reward is not the work, you're in the wrong profession.
Gary Raymond As a young writer I found it very difficult to understand that this is a long game, and you have to have determination and stamina. So I'd say try and understand just how long it can take to get anywhere. And stick to it with that in mind.
Gary Raymond A third novel. twenty years ago I lived in Florida for a few years, and this new book is based upon some of the things that happened to me there. But I can't say much more than that at the moment. Once you say an idea out loud, if you don't catch it on the page you might never get it back.
Gary Raymond I am always thinking about what I'm writing. So to that extent, most things inspire me - reading, conversations, walking down the street.
Gary Raymond The Golden Orphans is set in Cyprus, where I used to live, and the book is inspired by many of the dubious characters I met when I was there.
